For my character, the only strong personality trait I'd like is a strong dislike of Elves.  He isn't a strong advocate of killing them, but lets just say if Orcs attack an elvish caravan he might be a little late getting there to help.  Oh, and he is more than happy to use elf bone bolts.

I have a small request for my character.
Having been forced to work for the elves, and afterwards, live in the woods, Billy has a strong hatred of trees and elves. For this reason, he likes carrying a battleaxe around, even when there are no trees or elves in sight.

So, if you manage to get a spare battleaxe, could you enable the woodcutting labor on Billy to have him equip an axe?

Nice intro hehheh.

If there is time, my character would probably attempt his own secret sculpture project, cubes of ice appearing in the night...3x3x3 in size. Probably similarly scaled pyramids too. Hes not one to make snow dwarfs, not angular enough.

There's plenty of copper, so an axe isn't out of the question. Hell, I could do it now before Autumn. And a yes to the random ice sculptures.

Early spring, featuring incompetent wagon drivers, coming soon.

Early Spring: Who the hell parked the wagon?:

Akigagaks' Log

As Taters dug a temporary shelter out of the earth, I gathered my bearings. The magma pipe was at the foot of the cliff, so that must mean that the riv-

'Watch out!'

*CRUNCH*

I turned to see my companions in a panic,  the wagon had slipped down the cliff, scattering the supplies we had bought across its face.
'What happened?' I asked of Cenoraven.
'I dunno, one minute it was fine, the next... it was gone'
'Damn. Are the supplies okay?'
'Yeah, just spread out a bit. Bad news though. What's left of the wagon is unusable, the wood is little more than tinder.'
'...we need to find that river soon...'
'Boss?'
'Nothing important, start sparing with Zifnab, he needs to learn how to fight in close combat.'
'Right 'o'

Well this is annoying. Nothing made of wood until next spring, and that's only if we're still alive then. And if the elves show up. Fuck.

'Tau! How are the plans for the outer wall coming?'
'What! Oh, fine, fine...'
'Is it needlessly symmetrical?'
'...no?'
'Is it symmetrical?'
'Yes.'
'For defensive purposes?'
'...Yes?'
'Good'

Yeah, the wagon started on the middle of a 15z-level almost sheer cliff-face.

Mid-spring: Monotony.

Akigagaks' Log.

11th Slate
I felt so useless, just standing around watching, that I decided to help TauQuebb with the walls. I seemed happy for the help, but was concerned that I wouldn't follow his plans, which would make the walls asymmetrical. He's a strange one.

Taters hasn't spent much time with the group, instead he digs, and channels and mines, getting stone for the walls, digging an area for the farms, and now digging around looking for the cave river that I know is here somewhere. He doesn't know,  of course, but it should be a nice surprise.

20th Slate
Not much has happened in the last week or so. The wall is almost finished, we are completely out of barrels, and Taters still hasn't found the river. Zifnab and Cenoraven have been sparring for a while, both are now quite good at fighting hand-to-hand. and that's about it. I just hope this monotony lasts, but I have a feeling that things are about to get a lot more interesting.

Late Spring:

Billy's Journal

We have arrived at our new mountainhome. The snowy mountain seemed to beckon us while traversing the near endless frozen tundra that surrounds it.
Dwarven society will be rebuilt in these inhospitable lands.
Only strong dwarves thrive in this cold. Only the strong dwarves will be able to restore dwarven civilization to this continent, burn the psychopath Elves, and resist the Ork's brutal onslaught.

There's not a tree to be seen here. Such a lovely sight. Nonetheless, I regret not bringing a nice,  sharp battle-axe. You never know, when the first Elf will sneak up in the night, and plant saplings.
I'll ask our dear leader if there is a possiblity of getting a nice shiny axe.

I'm a bit worried about the lack of barrels. In this cold weather, we will need lots of booze to keep us warm. Lots of booze requires a lot of barrels. I'm happy to see though, that Taters hasn't wasted any time digging out an area for farming. With my farming skills, we will not starve this winter.

Early Summer: Accountancy

2nd Hematite.
I've to take a break from masonry to get our stocks in order, If we're going to survive we need to know how much we have, how much we need, and when we need it. So I've done a list in preparation for when the elves, and then the humans, turn up:

Elves (note, keep Billy away from depot when the elves are around):
Wood. Lots of wood.
Drinks.
Food.
Animals, for their flesh and hides, and It wouldn't hurt to get a breeding pair of anything.
Cloth/leather.

Humans:
Drinks.
Food.
Weapons.
Shields.
Cloth/leather.

11th Hematite.
Taters, who seems to have finally accepted my leadership, just told me that they have discovered a large amount of copper while mining. I asked for an estimate on the amount, and the response was 'A fuckton'. This is good news, as we have already seen a number of exposed native silver veins, so when we get a forge sorted out, we'll have   no problem either training ourselves, or making bolts to fight the orcs with.

28th Hematite.
A close call recently, we almost ran out of booze, but Billy started to brew using our two empty barrels. The depot is finished, and it is now being made secure so that any orcs that make it to the depot don't make any further. We still need the river before late summer, or we're going to die.

'Uh, Akigagak?'

'Yes, Taters?'

'There's something you should see.'
************
Midsummer: River, run!
1st Malchite.

'What is this about?'

'There. Do you see?'

'Cave spiders... I was right.'

'Come again?'

'Cave spiders mean on of four things; Underground rivers, underground pools, chasms, or bottomless pits.'

'WHAT?'

'Keep digging, and be on the lookout for wet rock. We've almost got our river.'

'But you just said there was only a one in four chance of an underground river.'

'I did do my research, you know. Although you could be right, there might be a chasm as well. Well, carry on.'

'We're going to die.'

Back to the records, I can see that out two farmers have been spending a lot of time in the dining room, chatting. Apparently there s not enough work for two, so I'll put Baudelaire to smoothing out the stone passageways around the place, for practice.

12th Malachite

'Wet stone!' Echoed the cry from the exploratory tunnel, 'Wet STONE!'

I ran as fast as I could, and discovered Taters digging away without a care in the world.

'What do you think you're doing? You might breach the river!'

'The wet stone is over there'. He replied, before turning back to work.

'Well, dig up, then over, then down, lets see if we can find the river safely.'

14th Malachite.

By Shin, that's a lot of murlocs.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This will need some planning.
**********
The rest of summer will be up soon.
Anyone want pics of anything specific?
**********
20th Malachite.

'So I dig a long tunnel that has one end under the river,-'

'Correct.'

'At that end I dig a 2x2 pit.'

'Yes.'

'And then I cause a cave-in above the river so that the stone smashes through the weakened riverbed, and falls in to the pit?'

'You've got it.'

'It'll take a while.'
**********
Late Summer:

7th galena.
We have enough booze to last a few weeks now, so the almost finished river diversion has been put aside for a more urgent project:
The Forges.

We need to siphon off some magma in to out fort, for ease of access and speed of delivery. It would be better if we could get them set up before late autumn, giving me time to forge enough bolts for Zifnab to kill all of the orcs with. It's a shame that the best metal we have access to is copper, but it'll have to do.

Actually, better idea. Make a temporary forge, close to the magma pipe, and build a more practical one later.

14th Galena.
The strangest thing is happening, mushrooms are spring up all around the fort, and not the small plump helmets, these are at least five times the size. Could they be the tower caps? The source of Voicewalled's timber?

19th Galena.
The temp. magma forge has been dug out, once the smelter and forge is built, we'll open the channel to the magma pipe.

27th Galena.
Things are going well, we now have a temp. forge, and a temp. well. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to start figuring out smithing, as I have decided that I shall be the one to rediscover the old dwarven ways.

rofl so now you know why i added murlocs... Dig ur tunnel and then add either a set (4) of fortifications, one after another, or if you want to be cool use grates in a tunnel. It'll keep the murlocs out but let the water though. They SHOULD be butcherable, the murlocs, but if not, the bones make them worth raping when you get a few champions. Champions. Don't try to take them with anything less. They kill you cause ur dorfs get exhausted, not from any real dmg.

HEED MY WARNING PUNY MORTAL!!!!

deems murlocs are nasty fuckers

(In other news my save in the same world had all its booze drunk by 14 mountain gnomes. Fucking gnomes... my archer killed 11 with an axe)

They're actually a special ore. Instead of being mined, they're hunted from between the trees and instead of producing metal, they produce food: rhesus pieces.

Early Autumn: What barrels? THOSE BARRELS!

10th Limestone.
Things in the fort are progressing well, and this season will be dedicated to preparing for the orcs. They shouldn't find us, as only humans know we're here, but Shin knows how reliable they are. So I had TauQuebb start producing mechanisms for some stone-fall traps, Buadlaire and Billy are stockpiling booze and food, but the barrels are becoming and even more serious problem. That's where I come in. I'm going to start making barrels out of copper, at least for this month. Cenoraven has noting better to do, so I've put him smelting copper ore.

15th Limestone.
Everyone's on edge. The booze has gone, because Billy, for some reason, won't use one of the THREE EMPTY BARRELS for booze, instead just shouting 'there are no barrels!' whenever I tell him to brew. THE BARRELS ARE RIGHT THERE YOU IDIOT!. The lack of beds is a problem still, who knew these dwarves were so picky. Oh and there are now around 40 murlocs, including babies. we might not make it to winter.

19th Limestone.
WE HAVE WELL NOW!! My new skills have a metal-smith have come in handy, and the copper bucket was the last thing we needed for a well. Okay so it's only a temporary measure, as it's above the cave river, but it'll mean we don't all die of thirst.

28th Limestone.
Thank Shin for TauQuebb, I've never drank water that tasted this good.

Great story so far, but real dorfs use cage traps coupled with cave-ins to negate [trAPAVOID]

The barrels cannot be used for brewing, because they are designated to a stockpile. Food stockpiles allowed to accept barrels always have 1 empty barrel assigned to them.
In the beginning of your fortress, it can be useful therefore, to disallow barrels from your food stockpiles.

Also, keep up the good story.

I don't know what happened, things were going so well.

The well had been built, much to the joy of everyone. But on their way to the well, taters and...and...someone else...billy?...died from their thirst. The loss of these two was much too much too much for buadlaire, who went berserk and attacked me.

I had to defend myself with, with my...my...  I don't remember what I used, but I killed him. TauQuebb saw this and flung himself into the cave river, where he was torn to bloody shreads.

Now, it's just me and the two soldiers, Zifnab and Cenoraven to fight the orcs. They're here, they found us, but we're going to die in battle, in a fort. Not on the run, in the wild.

That's a nice change.
