Another mystery death
« on: September 27, 2009, 06:56:23 pm »

My legendary gem setter (and resident cook) has just bled to death.  There are no hostile creatures in the fort.  My only clue here is a trail of blood...leading to the kitchen.  Is there any way that he could have died from kitchen tasks?? Could he have cut himself with his knife?  Or lit fat on fire on accident?  Does anyone know what could have happened here?

Do you have a hammerer? a captain of the guard? have you failed any mandates recently?
That's the number 1 cause of mysterious deaths, failed mandates + no jails = beatings everywhere!

I do have a hammerer and a recently missed mandate (ran out of tin).  But I don't have a guard captain, and I thought that prevented beatings?

It does... have you ever once had a guard captain/sheriff? there may be some time of trigger that activates when you elect one, even if you un-elect him after.
Also I think having a fortress guard may activate the hammerer as well, don't quote me on that though.
Hmm...
He could have gotten into a fight outside the fort anyway and not told you about it(cancels job, etc), accidents in workshops are non-existent.
Anyway, check your justice screen (z>justice) for info on whether or not it was the hammerer.

Looks like it was the hammerer.  I guess I should build a prison so my dwarves have an option other than death by hammering

It's more efficient to lock your hammerer away.  When he dies you'll get a new hammerer in a season or two, and he'll bring you another steel hammer for your armory.  Hammerers, like goblins are an unlimited resource.

Normally I'd consider that, but this game I'm going for king, and trying to respect the nobles at least this once.

Interestingly, my FPS dropped down to the 40s by the time I got to pop 80, and now I'm up to 145, and it hasn't changed much.  It is odd.

Be aware that having a fortress guard and sheriff does not guarantee safety from the Hammerer - once, as a test, I deliberately violated an export prohibition and 4 dwarves got arrested, two getting a month in prison and the other two getting 5 hammerstrikes. Amusingly, the hammerer had rather mixed thoughts after carrying out the first sentence - he took joy in slaughter, but he also witnessed death.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

if you could pull it, you could try to seriously injure the hammerer that leaves him crippled, but still alive.

Is there anyway to make everyone safe from the hammerer without hurting the hammerer in any way?

Strange as it sounds, I'm trying to play a game where no dwarves get permanently injured.

I do notice that my guys bleed a little now and then for no apparent reason (Dwarf Companion). No hammerers, sitting in my smelters, and bleeding.

Don't appoint a captain of the guard/sheriff

No dwarven justice will happen.  At least, none occurs in my games.

Hmm, I already appointed 1, and recruited 5 guards. Can I remove them, and it'll be as if nothing happened?

I've heard of people locking the hammerer in a room and dropping food and booze through a hole in the roof.
