How much does Sleeping in conserve calories?

Now I know how many calories my body uses in a day however I also enjoy sleeping in.

So assuming sleeping in really does stop cal count I wonder how much lets say sleeping 10-11 hours would do it by.

It is really annoying over here. I have people who really don't know almost anything about Calorie counts. So when I try to eat more for a meal because I didn't have enough for lunch I get a "You are eating too much" which as predictable. (Mind you I said more not tons) and the flak is all the more annoying by the fact that I don't REALLY know I only know that I know more then they do.

Actually as a Sub Question: What is a good snack strategy? I am in an odd situation where I need to eat quite a bit more then an ordinary person but not that much more (50% more, maybe more) and I don't get opportunities to eat Breakfast or Lunch. I also like to eat when I get bored (which is common).

Are you sure counting calories is a good strategy?

Starving men have been known to put on weight as soon as they give up.

And giving up is inevitable, because the body "can" control the brain.

I don't count calories as a strategy but I do so for getting a realistic ideas about what I should/could be eating.

For example when I get some people's suggestions about what I should eat, I count the calories and usually find out that they have very unrealistic views on how much people need to eat or even how much calories certain things they suggest "Cutting out" have.
-For example someone once suggested replacing a meal with carrots (though with dip it could be reasonable). The amount of carrots I'd have to eat would be very unpleasant. When I say suggested I mean berrated.

When I am looking at eating something yummy I compare it to my allowance and what I already ate today.

WOW!

Sleeping burns more calories then I thought. Almost half of walking slowly.

Now since Sleeping is effectively the bare minimum calories I can burn in a day I just multiply that by 24 and I get how many calories I am BOUND to use in a day.

What is the thing I write in for simple doing nothing but being awake?

Anyhow so what I found out was that I was right and they have unrealistic views on calories so I am at peace.

Ah, so your "just being alive for 24 hours" is your basal metabolic rate.  If you Google that, it should take care of your other inquiry.  In fact, sleep usually burns more calories than just sitting around watching TV, because your body is busy repairing itself and stuff.

My mind is being blown away. So the "You were sleeping" excuse doesn't apply.

What? No. Sleeping is actually the best way to NOT burn calories. That's why creatures hibernate.

No one said it was the best way to burn Calories... Walking slowly is more then double as effective as sleeping.

The Difference Muz is the idea that sleeping effectively burns no calories as opposed to burning some. The difference between: "Ohh, well only eating single a small meal because you slept for 10 hours" being acceptable and "What the heck?"

Mind you Hibernation is kind of a step further then sleep.

Uhm, are you looking to lose weight? If so, here's how I went from 95kg to 83 in ~6 months. Yes, it's rather slow, but those kgs aren't coming back, and it's super easy (ie I ate everything I wanted and I didn't starve myself).

The trick is to reduce the size of your meals. Big meals stretch your stomach, which means you have to eat more to feel full. If you never fill your stomach to the full, it gradually shrinks. So, start eating whenever you're hungry, but don't eat till you're full. There's a certain lag between your stomach and your brain. You'll feel hungry when you stop eating, but in 5 minutes or so it'll go away, especially if you finish off the meal with a bar of chocolate (chocolate is great for making you feel full). When I started, I had nearly a dozen meals a day. But with time I needed less and less meals per day because it took me longer to get hungry. Nowadays I have 4-6 small meals, I'm not starving myself, I eat whatever I want and my weight is stable.

Intuitively (i.e. probably not entirely correct) sleeping in a warm bed will use up less calories than a not so warm one, because of less need to keep oneself at the right temperature.  But beyond a certain point (or in a hotter climate) you're going to be too warm, needing other body regulating mechanisms to kick in (not sure how much calorific value goes into producing sweat) and perhaps rather than sitting snug, tossing and turning under the covers.

Not to mention other night movements/racing heart arising from dream-induced movements not entirely suprressed by the REM atonia mechanism.

And, indeed, compare with watching TV, where one can find that physical movement and internal functions (including depth of breathing, and often heartrate) has become suppressed, and quite possibly a lot of the usual conscious and semi-conscious thought processes, while the main focus of concentration is narrowed down towards the TV programme.  (Although if you're in the habit of snacking in front of the TV, that would definitely skew the results!)

As someone who often listens to recorded radio shows while reclined in bed, with a similar style of aural concentration/submasking-of-input, I might question if I also burn less calories while doing this than when similarly positioned but actively brainstorming some sort of project or other (in the vain hope that I might remember all my clever solutions, or even that I had any, when I awake in the morning!).

I know I go to sleep quicker when listening to a number of my favourite shows (which can be annoying, as I will probably have missed a proportion of the final one) than if my mind is whirring with active ideas and plans and whatnot, so that's one thing I would need to account for in a comparison, as is the fact that I will stir myself to go to the computer and key up the next recording in that set.  Apart from not having a whole-body-calorimiter at hand, it's probably not something I could analyse single-handedly, in any case. :)

I can't imagine what I'd put into that box that would be nasty or become nasty.
