Please tell me you've attempted to do the same, I didn't think that was even possible.

I can never catch the damn carp.  It's amazing what pansies they become in adventure mode.

I took note of your speed in the picture. When did frog demons become playable characters?

I can never catch the damn carp.  It's amazing what pansies they become in adventure mode.

It is mostly because in Fortress mode what happens is this:

Carp: Hello Dwarf, What a wonderful day we are having.
Dwarf: ACK A Carp, and it is using good manners! I must kill it!
Carp: Wait what?
Dwarf: TACKLE!
*Dwarf Falls into water*
Dwarf: Garble garble garble
Carp: To translate he cannot swim, he is drowning, and he is prone. Well I might as well nibble him to death and all that.

In Adventure mode not only can you swim but you have armor and weapons too.

Carp would still be just as deadly in Fortress mode if they had no attack at all (assuming Dwarves still tried to stop them by jumping into the river)

The difference between fortress mode ai and adventurer ai changes.  Wolves in fortress mode will run away from you, wolves in adventure mode will you apart faster then you can type "O S***."  Carp are actualy deadly from the fact that their bite is the strongest bite out of every single creature in the game, the fact that they cause most people to drown in water from people dodging, and the fact that dwarves can't see them until they are right up at the bank of the river, making easy pickings for the carp.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I ended up leaving a town once and watched in abject amusement as the townspeople were butchered by hippos.
It killed five townspeople and got a title before I sent it into a building. It exploded in gore.

Also, I almost got carp'd in the same event. Carp'd by carpy carp. Carp are carpy things, and are only fit for carp biscuits and other carp-related carp-constructions. Did I mention they're carp? Those carp are carpy things.
And look at the guy's speed. He is blessed with unholy power. The power to defeat CARP!

Far from it. The 1:6 bite attack is identical to almost every other bite attack, and I don't think there's any normal creature smaller than a carp. Since damblock and the difference in size between creatures directly affects damage, a carp would have it's damage roll randomly reduced by up to four against an unskilled dwarf peasant (barring criticals).

Also, to put it in perspective, if I'm reading Toady's Combat Formula right, a no-quality iron sword is roughly equivalent to a creature attack of 1:10. A masterful steel sword is roughly equivalent to 1:26. So carp are pretty wimpy.

The main reason fish are feared, as has already been mentioned, is that dwarves tend to get scared, dodge into the water, and drown. Carp in particular are feared simply because they're the most common fish, so they're the most likely to be found luring your dwarves to their squiggly blue death-traps.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Dodging into water always has this strange, Wile E. Coyote-esque feeling, where you walk the full tile distance over the water, glance down, and fall straight into the water.

The bite attack might be standard but compared to a dwarfs unarmed attack of 1:2 it is quite powerful at it's 1:6

Just because it's three times as large doesn't necessarily mean that's a large difference. Even a full roll of 6 might not be a particularily strong attack.

Besides, when you factor size in, the dwarf would be doing more damage to the carp than vice-versa if it were a fair fight. Even if the dwarf is too busy drowning to be attacking the carp, the carp would be "missing" the dwarf more often than dealing damage due to it's size disadvantage.

The real killer is the grasp part which makes it so they pull your dwarf in with them.
