Tourist Trap
« on: September 26, 2009, 06:54:16 pm »

I was thinking of starting a succession game in which each player has to build some kind of megaproject during their year. This, of course would be on the largest embark possible, allowing players ample room and resources to complete their goal.

We would use "superdwarves", i.e. [SPEED:0], [NO_DRINK], [NO_EAT], [NO_SLEEP], [NOBREATHE], [NOBLEED], [NOSTUN], [NONAUSEA], [NOEMOTION], [NOPAIN], and [FIREIMMUNE], so that even the biggest projects can be completed within a year.

Anyone interested?

Largest embark possible? I tried that once.. Moving the screen would cause it to freeze for about two minutes.

Like that, yes, but all in one fort instead of scattered all around the world. Also, that's primarily to have a cool place to adventure in. My idea is just to have a cool-looking fortress.

Seriously, I'm not sure that a computer has even been invented that can make DF run even marginally well while doing what you are expecting it to do. The map size alone is going to take everything the best computer has just to creep along and thats before you start factoring in the magma and water flows, pathing issues, that five billionth microcline cup, or all the cats running around.

Its something I would love to see... but I advise you wait until computers have evolved a little bit more and Toady has done a little troubleshooting when it comes to pathing.

Tried embarking on a 16x16 map, with brook, chasm, magma pipe, and HFS. Got ~20 FPS.

8x8 should be plenty large enough for almost everything

Agreed. We should start when the next version comes out, though. That way we can (likely) have a larger started area due to the fact that the average computer could handle it better.

considering how much extra he put in the "squads" screen, that realization is moving further and further away.
