yeah, just like it sounds... a sparring incident (apparently) left one of my dwarves unable to progress in her training.. i noticed one of my dwarves WASNT a champion after a few seasons, and i looked... she had gray wounds to her neck and brain... i de-drafted her and i watched her for a little while, noting the fact that she now sleeps wherever she likes and gets the occasional bad thought from it... i wrote her off, im not sure if brain damage prevents skill ups, but then my dwarves elected her mayor. i have this image of a retarded, narcoleptic mayor issuing orders for marble grates, which she apparently likes a lot. the rest of my dwarves absolutely LOVE her... she refuses to drink alcohol... when i have over 2k booze in stockpiles... do brain-damaged dwarves stop drinking? this is the first time i have noticed such a thing....

You should make her bookkeeper and demand highest precision.

That takes me back to grade school.  Also, the longest English word that can be typed using only the top row of keys on a keyboard is "typewriter."

If this all doesn't fix it, your dwarfs are lazy. Apply magma.

Try rubbing a cat on it, that seems to help.

i thought this was the standard operating procedure for elected officials within any government.

It sounds like she took a bruising to her nervous system from training, which is unfortunately unhealable.  At this stage she is "injured" and thus:
A) Can no longer train,
B) Will faint every so often (until she gains in the "tough" attribute), causing her to become useless in pretty much any job,
C) Will only drink water, never alcohol (although I thought this only applied to bedridden dwarves).

An administrative job is pretty much the only job she'll be capable of now, but as denito said you should also make her the bookkeeper if you can; forcing her to keep the books at the highest accuracy will mean she will spend almost every waking moment working, and due to the way DF doesn't distinguish between physical vs. mental and social skills, will raise her attributes rather quickly, including toughness.

The demands for marble grates is standard noble behavior though, and be thankful she isn't demanding anything difficult to impossible (like large gems and Electrum).

Dwarves shouldn't sleep in random places unless they have the Hunting labor assigned - even military dwarves will sleep in their bedrooms if you allow them to.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

she aint got any labors assigned beyond dyeing and mining and the defaults, yet she is sleeping on the floor of my workshop area... though there are less beds in my fort than there are dwarves (62 total).. maybe there is something in that?

Have you actually assigned her a bed? Mayors are like nobles in that you have to specifically assign them rooms of sufficient quality or they will get unhappy and throw tantrums.

Also are you sure she's actually sleeping and not merely passing out?

If you don't assign the beds to individuals, I found you only need roughly 40 beds for a 200-dwarf fort. But yes, most nobles, like the mayor, demand their own private bedroom, although she should still sleep in unassigned beds if she can make it here, so she's almost certainly passing out. You can check; if they're sleeping they'll have the 'sleep' job but if they pass out, they won't.

Also seconding that brain-damaged ex-military sounds like a realistic electee.

He's not brain-damaged, just really, really, really, really old.

Which could be the same thing, I guess.

If you don't assign the beds to individuals, I found you only need roughly 40 beds for a 200-dwarf fort.

As a reminder, this will only work if the beds aren't designated as rooms or if they're placed in a barracks - if a room is designated from a bed, the first dwarf that decides to sleep on said bed will immediately claim the room.
