Gah, my dwarves just elected an immigrant peasant to be mayor the second he arrived on the site.
Your dwarves are learning. Instead of choosing someone important, they choose a useless peasant. When he dies, they won't lose anyone important.

Perhaps the dwarves are getting closer to self-awareness...

It's random chance.

Dwarf Fortress isn't perfect. Not yet anyway. Just look at the version number.

None of your dwarves are friends, most likely.

Also, YOU KILL YOUR MAYOR ALL THE TIME? WHAT SORT OF PERSON ARE YOU. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
Seriously.  Mayors are the bomb. Almost as cool as the Dungeon Master.  I mean, he's a normal dwarf, who just happens to be the most popular! He even does work!

Actually, I don't kill him. Most of my forts don't last long enough for everyone to die. I get bored quickly.

And my current fort is stuck in a glacier. Meaning that, since it's full of ice, it's worthless. No sieges, barely any thieves...
