I think it's about time we had a discussion thread that can't turn into an argument.

What's your Major?!?!

So I notice there's a bunch of people here in universities, quite a few just starting this year, and plenty of people planning for higher education.  Or graduated long ago, whatever.  Time to answer that question every Freshman get's barraged with by the other people who are way too excited to be there.

What's your Major?!?!

What are you studying?  Haven't picked yet?  What are you planning to?  Courses and classes?  What have you cleared?  Comments, advice, bitching?  And hey, while we're at it, what are you planning to do in the future?

Well I'm starting at university to study mathematics the day after tomorrow.

I'm still a senior in high school. I'm not 100% sure yet, but I think I'll want to major in chemistry.

Well, I have a Masters in Information and Decision Systems (basically the Business use of computers). Seeing as I do database programming for a living, that seems to work out ok.

Does it terrify anyone else to know that Toonyman will design bridges somewhere that people will have to drive on?

Liberal Arts, but that's just because you have to declare a major to get financial aid and I'm undecided.  I'm leaning toward English for my actual major.

I for one can't wait to see these bridges.  You'll have to hit them going fast, so you have enough momentum not to fall off the corkscrew.  And watch out for the Klein Tunnel at the middle end.

Undoubtedly the bridges won't actually end up on the other side of the obstacle, instead ending in a different dimension.

We don't have majors in Britain.  If you choose, say, maths, you'll have a morning lecture on maths, a discussion on maths, an afternoon lecture on maths, some revision time on maths and then a night studying maths.  I'm pretty good at maths, but doing it all the time sounds hellish.  Therefore I'll probably end up doing Natural Sciences or some kind of engineering.

Say something.  I'm not decided, and if English is a useless degree, I'd like to know before I become one of those people with a college education and no fancy job to show for it.
