How did I get a Gremlin Hunter as a migrant??
« on: September 25, 2009, 03:24:34 pm »

No no, not a dwarf who hunts gremlins, but a gremlin who is a hunter....

She is a little lowercase, green "g" and she has ambusher skill.

She has a personal section but no "favorites" or preferences section.

How did this happen?

A little bit: just some reactions in the raws. ("reactions_standard").

Otherwise no.

I've heard that duplicate entries can cause wierd stuff to happen. That might be the cause.

Actually, it's because Gremlins are sentient, and so if your mountainhome lives in an area with gremlins, they can end up 'adopting' them.
Though ingame mechanics might work differently, that's about the best way to describe it.
If all goes well she should remember to eat and drink and hunt.

I've had dwarves name resident sentient creatures (a bunch of batmen in my bottomless pit, after several years), but I've never heard of them being adopted...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

It's more of a mountainhome only thing, the game sees the gremlin as being sentient, mistakes it as a dwarf, and thus has a chance of spawning it with immigrants.

Is this (theoretically) possible with any sentients? Satyrs, etc etc?

I have never seen it happen before and I'm not really sure how it could "accidentally" spawn with immigrants. As far as I know, immigrants are generated on the spot, so it shouldn't matter what the Mountainhome has. Unless, of course, the gremlin has the [PET] and [COMMON_DOMESTIC] tokens added to its raws, which would then make it be available as a pet for immigrants to bring with them.

However, I have been extensively playing around with turning various sentients into members of my fort (using Dwarf Companion) and I do know that she should mostly behave as a normal member of the fort, albeit one who can't be assigned any rooms or jobs outside of fishing and hunting. Alternately, if you find making dwarves into Fortress or Royal guards to be annoying, you can make her one and she will function just fine.

Also, if a male gremlin shows up, it's possible for them to marry. But unless you get another gremlin, she'll never have any friends (sentients only form relations with their own species).

Well, since gremlins have an 800 year+ life span, it'll probably outlive the entire fortress if it doesn't die a premature, violent death.

So you're telling me it has a short lifespan.

Got it.

But if it's hunting, it has no reason to be near levers...

But if it's hunting, it has no reason to be near levers...

Hunters carry their prey directly to the butcher workshop. Depending on fort design, the magma flood lever may be between the entrance and butcher's.

Good luck with the gremlin :)
