If I understand correctly, the crystal would likely be a generic unit of magic power, and then the player uses that power for casting from a list of spells. This is only a vague idea based mostly on either what I would do or what I think is likely to come up in any given game with magic, so we will just have to wait to find out.

The magic system will be pretty straight forward,
 since I plan on making a textual list appear
 which says which keys do what while casting.

Here is a basic list of magic to add:

CHECK LAST POST

The crystals are underground, and you will need a certain amount to cast each effect.
Crystal costs will be based on usefulness and scale.
I intend for there to be some system where you can pick how many crystals to use,
 and you can increase or decrease the size of the thing being created,
 or other such altercations.

I'll be greening these out as I add them.

Is Magma a material?
How about tree chunks?
And player clones?

I assume that spawning crystals would either be impossible, or have an extended cost so that you could never achieve a net gain of it...

I think I'm going to leave out materials that would break the game,
 but magma will be available for every spell type.

No players, and no crystals.
I'm really only going to add the ones I find useful,
 and build onto the list as time passes.

I'm working on the interface right now, and I think it will be very flexible.
I'm just going to make it as open ended as possible.

EDIT:

I'm not sure that I mentioned this, but as of last version,
 you can concrete stuff in place by applying mud to the tile in question.
Just pick up a chunk of mud, and place it on a preoccupied tile before it dries.

EDIT:

I've added in the remainder of the materials.
The system is working very well so far.

It will be possible to rain any common material that falls.
This excludes plate material and fire, as far as I know.

Don't forget that it will take an insane amount of crystals to do.
As in, you harvest for an hour,
 and then the lava rains for like forty second.

EDIT:

Due to getting my 360 replaced,
 I am going to be on hiatus on and off.
I expect a release around Wednesday.

Don't get me wrong, when I get that in,
 I'll be debug activating magma rain all over the place.
It will be a good demonstration when I take the game around with me.
Especially if it rains water afterwards.

Here's the updated list:

Effects:
- Create a sphere
- Create a hollow sphere
- Create a giant hollow bowl
- Create same bowl filled with material of choice
- Create pillar
- Destroy surrounding sphere
- Dig shaft
- Dig stairs
- Create flat plate of chosen material
- Create artificial waterfall
- Cause rain
- Cause rain of chosen material
- Spawn animal
- Spawn plant

Materials:
- Soil
- Rock
- Plate
- Mud
- Magma
- Fire
- Water

Select Size

I've added the "Rain Dance" spell,
 and now it is entirely possible for things to rain from the sky other than rain.

Magma is definitely the most extreme.
It totals over the whole map.
Too bad the game is limited to simulating only the visible area,
 else it would be very apocalyptic.

I'm going to add in the auto-dug stairs and shafts now.

Actually, besides killing the trees, the magma rain is pretty useful.
Since hardened magma isn't easily swayed by water,
 it helps prevent the ground from melting all over your established stuff.

EDIT:

Today I started work on a directional input system that can be used for multiple functions in the future. It's a necessary component of the magic system.

I also bought a ton of paint and started painting my room.
The window frame is black so far.
It will need another coat tomorrow.

I spent about four hours and two reembarks constructing a starting area for future reembarks.
The skeletal hoary marmots are ripping through my unprepared settlers at a similar speed to me ripping through my Easter candy. I'm not used to playing without a graphics pack, so smoothing over the ground everywhere I want stuff to go is necessary.
