I have actually tried looking into this but I can't find any good ideas for music. I do strongly recommend chiptunes, some classical 8-bit sound.
Do you want original music, or can you rip of something else and call it good?

For sound effects, I do have a recomendation: download the program called Praat, and mess around with the Create Sound From Formula and Gamma Tone functions. I'm not sure how much technical knowledge you need to use it properly thou. if you have specifics of EXACTLY what sounds you want I could make some for you.

I'd like water and a very short gentle popping sound,
to be used each time the cursor is moved a space.

I need to find out the way to test if a source is playing or not,
so I can make this sound less crummy.
Too many resets on water noises that are already playing.

Any way to check the duration of a sound effect, and then compare that and the start time with the game clock?  Could be imprecise.

Plopping sound: Gamma tone.

Water sound: a huge amount of really small gamma tones, and a  kind of wobbling white noise.

Just got it!

Preparing to listen...

EDIT:

That is perfect!
I'll definitely be adding that as a possible main track.

Speaking of which, here's an update:

I have gotten sound working 100%,
and have already added in tons of ambiance.

I found this sweet oriental background music which is very fadey and flowy,
so it fits perfectly in a danger/safe setting.
There is also an underwater soundtrack, which is similarly hazy.
I have rain, water, and forest sounds added in too.

-------------------------

Before I can release this,
I want to finish up with temperature variation,
get text working fully (90% done),
find a few more sound effects for misc stuff,
add in "Where The Horizon Meets The Shadowy Stranger",
and then one last surprise addition.

It might be out tomorrow,
but it is more likely to be released around Wednesday.

-------------------------

This atmosphere is so perfect now.
I played for a full hour without interruption,
 and that looping oriental soundtrack
can handle some pretty high mileage.
Not for a second did I think it was irritating or repetitive,
but instead I found myself clinging to it,
since the silence is way too silent now.
I was very drawn in, so I barely realized
that fall had started when I decided to exit.

I'm glad.

@A Dwarven Smokeologist:  That's one nice soundtrack.  Listening to it exclusively it might get a bit boring near the end but I'll have to see it in the context of a game.

Yeah, in the games context, it is broken up by other sounds,
and it will be interrupted or changed every now and then.

I have half a mind to go back into my game for another hour,
but I suppose that would be irresponsible.

New rule:
I will only play released versions for personal enjoyment.
That way I am more willing to work on the game,
so I can have the next features at my disposal.

EDIT: 1000th post!!!

It's like we have three humongous projects on this forum: DF, LCS and CScream :D

Would you be upset if I didn't know what LCS was?

I don't think my project can comfortably sit in the same list as DF,
but if we did have a list, I vote Tower of Azari
and that one cave game (???) that Jack Bread made.

I mean, Jack's game actually had an ending!
And ToA has RAWS!

Also, CScream is a bad way to shorten it.
Counter Strike Cream?
Actually sounds kind of cool.

To do list:
- Add alternate background tracks
- Release

That's right,
as soon as I get the last 3 chosen tracks working,
 I'll upload it.

Prepare for creamy gold.

Liberal Cloud Scream  ;D
Actually, it's Liberal Crime Squad.  Not looked to much into it myself.
So this next version will have the ability to save changes made to a site, right?
