You should punch him in the mouth. No, induce irony:

You should code a program that punches him in the mouth.

I used to know a kid like that, he was on a robotics team I did some rudimentary programming stuff for.  He would go on and on about how much he knew about various programming languages, but the one week I brought my laptop with Eclipse and DevC++ installed he suddenly had to leave early... never spoke to me about it again... hardly spoke to me at all again :P  I seem to have that effect on people in real life :P

[EDIT]:  This is a sign of my trying to write something when I'm tired, I ramble on and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on....  oh well.

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

Tell the truth... He had to leave early because you punched him in the mouth, and never spoke to you about it again because his jaw is now permanently broken.

I share the sentiment with everyone here I think.

Eggplant?! Lol!

He must know something about programming,
or there is no way he could have acted so confident,
even when I started talking about more technical things,
though he never said anything specific enough.

I went along with what he was saying for probably too long,
before eventually telling him I thought his skill level to be way below mine,
even if I'm a relative newb,
because I couldn't tell that he knew what anything I said meant.

He also said at one point, something similar too:
"Nah, it's great that you're adding in all those variables and stuff,
but..." I can't remember the rest, but the general idea of the sentence was that variables or at least their declarations didn't really matter much in the full swing of things.
This is a few seconds before I tried calling him out.

I have no idea what he thinks he knows,
but from his perspective, Java is all powerful,
and leaves the other programming languages behind.
And there is apparently very little code editing when developing stuff for it.

He also claimed that Java could take code from any language,
and translate it into Java code.

I was already questioning the validity of everything he said at this point,
but I know absolutely nothing about Java,
and I've seen some pretty epic open source programs out there,
so I just gave him the benefit of the doubt on that one.

Java?
It can run from a web page, and yet it can do 3D graphics. (Biggest advantage, really)
It runs on a bytecode system, so, although much slower than compiled languages, it it cross-platform.
Unlike web game languages, it can do some fancy stuff.

*Supposedly* it is great for some types of development like buisness GUIs, if almost every java book is to be believed.

But mostly, it is best on the web, or cross-platform.
And it is slower.
And it is extremely object oriented obsessed.
(It  does have the capability to use OpenGL, and that makes it more powerful than flash and other primarily-web-game languages)

The only time it is faster than C or C++ is when the C/C++ is poorly designed and the java isn't.

And no, it will not make your tiles round, any more than you can already(but with even less performance).

I've made a ton of tweaks to the erosion process,
and filled in some more holes.
It crashes far less often.

Water displacement works fine,
 but not for Orange yet.

Okay, I've worked on this game profusely today,
and I have a lot to show for it.

First off, the erosion is super tweaked, to be more interesting and dynamic.
There are a few changes left to be made, but for now, it is very stable and interesting.

The second major improvement is working water displacement and swimming:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think you'll find the controls underwater to be exactly as they should be.

And last, but not least at all,
I've found the crash causing bug, and removed it.
I'm not saying the game will never crash,
because I'm sure there are rare occasions I'm overlooking.

There has also been progress on saving technology,
and there should be persistent save files any day now.

I'd recommend making a water crystal on a hillside somewhere,
and watching the water work its magic.
The key for that is capital 'X'.

The next thing to be added will be player traits,
including but not limited to an air limit.

Here's the link:

As always, enjoy!

EDIT:
Mediafire is refusing to take my file right now.
I'll upload it in around 10 hours from now.
Orange is sleep now time.

The water does whatever it wants,
and counts you as a static object.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it yet,
but water can push along loose debris downhill,
like tree parts and loose ground,
 and any added objects.
It's getting pretty complex in this context.

Anyways, here's the link:

EDIT:
Underwater caves are sort of fun.
It's cool to dive down them,
and see what sort of path they take.
Don't forget about 'c' for view changes.

After exploring a couple of them
I've decided I'll be adding in random underground stuff sooner than planned.

Hmm, a few things in case you want it to look better by the way:

-Don't let physics stuff happen outside the edge of the map actualy generated.
-when using the c modes, consider putting black textures where there is solid matter instead of just emptiness so that it looks more... solid.
-The bottom of water is invisible, it shouldn't be.
-Consider changing SOMETHING when the camera is inside solid matter, perhaps make all surfaces transparent like water, or making the entire screen black...

- I still think there shuld be some way to jump/swim withoute pausing.
- Consider adding an FPS counter.

I like all of your input, and I'll consider all of it.

But for now:

I hope you guys realize the implications of that image.
I vow to release a new version before I go to sleep.

Textures? And they are combinable with your custom color variations?

...

This... Yea, I understand the implications.
