Don't worry, it sounds like my game was fighting for permission to your files...
or something like that.
There is SOME lag when a new map starts generating, but nothing more than ten seconds.

In the next version, you can just wait outside, and the HFS will come to you.
And destroy your shit.
I would release right now, but it needs some tweaking before it can be considered an enjoyable experience.
It's pretty unfair currently, as the warning window is very small, and difficult to identify.

EDIT:

I've revealed the uncommon structure in another thread, so I may as well cover it here.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Those are buildings made of topsoil materials.
You can assume that the original inhabitants made them that way to disguise them from the HFS.

As you can see, some show signs of damage,
and one building is completely demolished, with only support structures intact.

I intend for these to eventually hold random loot.
I would also like to see a recluse type of creature living in these abandoned settlements,
which would flee upon you discovering it,
making it a fairly hard thing to side up with.

Also, the current HFS damage looks quite different than the damage in the picture,
so I will be working for consistency.

Is there a guide or anything? I had no idea what I was doing, eventually managed to get orange to climb a mountain, and then tried to make him stomp off it, but it didn't work :-\

The readme covers everything, but very loosely.
Stomping loosens the soil, unless you manage from a great height.
So unless you dug out some caves or something, it would have much of an effect,
expect ruining the ground for future digging activity.

As has been mentioned a ton, auto-jump is the J key.
That should make exploring a ton easier, if that's what you want to do.
I hope the map edges work better for you in the future.

Okay, here is the newest version:
http://www.mediafire.com/?yjo5nmiqdyw

The sky is pretty much finished, except for minor tweaks.
I'll probably add more depth to it later, but right now, it serves its purpose.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure you are within 100 steps of a cave,
which is deep enough to place you five tiles away from the surface in all directions.

You guys are bound to abuse it, since there aren't any penalties, and it's cool to watch.
Later that will not be the case.

Also, the next couple additions will add a lot in terms of game play.
I'm going to stray away from my Exploration Set, since I  covered most of it,
and there are more important, easily-implemented features to cover now.

That's awesome!  You're right though, I intentionally stood out in the open for a minute, just to see.  Managed to dodge a couple times, but wasn't fast enough the third time :P  Not really any skill either, just got lucky the first two times :P

You have earned the

One request though, some way to build a bridge (or roof, depending on where it's being built I guess).  Or is there already a way I'm just missing?

On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

I am proud to accept your nomination.
Thanks dude!
I've been having an off night, and that made my day.

Anyways, along the lines of things to easily implement that will improve game play,
you can find ceiling/bridge stuffs.
Also, support/cave-ins.
That ought to make things more fun.

Okay, so I'm off to a Christmas party, though I don't personally celebrate the occasion.
I'm taking my laptop with me, as the next couple of updates are very exciting,
and I'm having a blast implementing them.

I know I've failed twice before, but I really think I can make water work this time.
It's already 90% implemented, and frame rate is barely affected.

The next release will have not only improved physics,
but also a few things I've been working on.
Look forward to semi-meaningful game play.

Why do people keep saying that?
Is it my spacing?
I like to keep my lines short to be easier on the reader,
and I even indent the lines that have a comma,
 like these two.

Do you guys read it like free form poetry,
because that's the way I think sometimes as I right it.
Actually, I sort of "sing" the words as I type them straight out of my consciousness.

I didn't get anything done today, as I forgot to take my mouse with me.

Sometimes I wonder what my brain does all day,
as it quite obviously refuses to help me remember anything useful.

Great wonderful news!

Water!!!! It is water!

Okay... let me calm down for a second.
It seems that water is running really well, and really fast,
so I will put in some sort of river bed system, and some basically infinite sources.

Here's my current thoughts:

I want rainfall.
Like real falling water from the sky sort of rainfall.
I've done some tests, and it looks like it will be able to handle it without a big performance hit.

Here's another thought,
since I can't think of a good source of rivers in the current system:
What if lake tiles, which at the moment can't dry up unless you dig at the edges,
have a 1/10 chance of creating a water tile above them,
creating streams where lakes are concentrated enough.

I think there might be enough calculation time to put in directional pressure.
I'll see what I can do.

Now I have a good reason to put in the Waterplates.

No promises yet, since the water is acting very oddly currently,
but pretty soon you should be able to interact with water and terrain in a very DF sort of way.

Thanks!

Okay.
Expect some crazy insane stuff released tomorrow,
which I'm very excited to show all of you.

Here is an instance of something sweet that happened when I was play-testing my game:

I found a map with a building on the tip of a mountain.
I repeatedly stomped the building, until it had fallen in,
and had a hollow precipice down the center.

Then,
through a special process that you will all experience first hand,
the tower was filled in with water.

Here's where it gets cool.

Something special happened to the tower, causing the right half to be destroyed.
All of the water poured out, and rolled down the side of the mountain.

I was freaking out at this point.
"It can do that? I didn't know it could do that yet!"

I was so thrilled to see the water pouring out of the side of that tower properly,
that I stayed up extra late working on the new stuff.

Saying it doesn't seem necessary at this point.
You guys are in for a treat.
