First off, you need to embark in a region which contains a Mountain biome - HFS won't spawn anywhere else.

Second, you might want to edit init.txt and set SHOW_EMBARK_OTHER to ALWAYS so you can actually see where it is (it'll show it as a bright blue "£").

Third, make sure you've got a really strong military...

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I conquered my first HFS recently. It was... surprisingly easy.

You probably got lucky and got the green ones. Try again with the yellow ones and see how many of your dwarves survive...

Except that the water evaporates as soon as it comes near it.

An easier way to make sure you've got it is to use the site finder and put "yes" for "other features."

If you make a cage trap out of Hidden Fun Stone cage and mechanism, and knock out the SoF with a cave-in while it's standing on the trap, it'll temporarily forget that cage traps don't work on it.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that doesn't work with SoF due to them being [NOSTUN] (as well as [NOPAIN] and [NOBREATHE]).

Have him stand in magma, and cave that tile into water? Would that make it obsidian before it boils?

Perhaps, but if you're going to go to those lengths, you may as well just use a cave-in (which seems to kill everything).

Which is why opening from the top is never a good idea.
