Eureka Seven Movie
« on: September 25, 2009, 07:36:14 am »

Anyone seen it?  It's... Well you might like it if you've never seen Eureka Seven but if you've any attachment to the characters from the series you probably won't.

Well if you really liked the series you may not like the movie much anyway.  They reused almost all the artwork from the show, and a huge number of actual scenes from the show as well.  Sure you could say that was fine for a retelling of the series, except it's not a retelling.   The situation in the story is totally different, and characters all have completely different personalities, well all the characters that get enough lines to have a personality anyway.  It's the only reason it's called Eureka Seven as far as I can tell is so they can reuse the huge number of scenes and art assets from the show that they did.

Don't mention that blasphemous 'work' here!
No, but seriously. That was the most atrocious 're-imagining' I've seen. They reduced Eureka to a tsundere character (Not saying that tsunderes are bad; rather, taking a brilliantly developed character and flattening her into a two-dimensional one; that's bad) and the entire movie made me want to pretend it wasn't related to Eureka Seven.

Eureka Seven is probably still one of my favorite anime, simply because of the characters. The movie stripped away everything that made the characters interesting. I suppose I wasn't really the target audience, though.

Right, well if you stuck around until you end you almost got your money's worth thanks to the bonus content interviews and gag reel.  The director of the movie said that he had intended it as a movie that someone who didn't know anything about the series could go and watch for two hours and have fun.  The way it came off made it sound like he was more interested in mass market appeal than the series' fans.  Apparently they had a different script writer too.

Er, well after furthur study it's not so much of a problem that they had a different scriptwriter as it it that they didn't have Dai Sato involived who wrote the script for many epsodes, including the first four, and was also in charge of "Series Composition", whatever that is.
