Ah, it's not worth it. I got really worked up over it.

Just move on, don't make the same mistake I did.

We probably shouldn't hold grudges based on forum games, or else everyone who posted in Mafia would have a grudge with everyone else.  Especially Toony.

It doesn't eat up so much time, actually.  It only eats up as much time as you want it to.  On the other hand, not putting enough time in may get you lynched, so whatever.

If we're talking about people from long ago, what happened to Mcdoomhammer?

No clue.  Profile says his last post was around the end of last year, and that was just about someone using one of his quotes as a sig.  Nothing hinting at fluttering away.

But any posts that may have been in Various Nonsense are gone, so I don't know.  He may just have wandered off.  It's been happening for a while now.

...How would we ever know if somebody... God forbid... died? Their account would just sit there, unaccessed, forever... and we wouldn't know. They'd be forgotten about, eventually, and we'd just carry on, replacing them with new forumites, as if they hadn't existed to begin with.

That sounds bad, but you have to remember, the internet always takes a back seat to real life. If someone here died, even if we didn't know, he would be remembered by friends and family.

VN is not *quite* gone, just restricted, mostly to people with no intrest in preserving it. I tried, but javascript failed me without PHP to back it up (javascript to preserve the login info, but it couldn't save more than a few pages at a time, and those quite slowly(5 minutes or so per page?))

If anyone can make a javascript->PHP program, I already have code digging through it all, it just needs to be able to send the info rather than store it.

Also, IE only, as firefox restricts javascript to only sending/retrieving data to/from the domain it came from.

Mostly, can someone help me with PHP? It's generating strings, mostly. I can get the topic name and a total HTML dump, but don't know how to send the data forward or recieve it. Processing the data can wait, and be done in any language, it's getting the data that I can't fully do.

No, doing a URL crawl through VN and with some upgrading, it would send all of the page data to files. Except javascript can't do the files part, so it would have to be outsourced to PHP.

Basically, the result would be a massive dump of discarded topics so that toady can delete them with less complaint.

I would then have more time to write a program to process it and reverse it back into BBcode(or whatever it is called here), plus a quick post header with poster name and profile link, post subject, and time.

I would keep the raw dump to myself, but share the rest, because any personal data would be stripped in the process.

Of course, by share, I mean a raw-text .rar with one .txt of bbcode/header per topic, and distribute it sparsely, by PMs here or through other forums, so only people interested in the past know of it's existance.

Bonus if the result is the deletion and recreation of a stricter VN to take the strain off of GD and LA of the slightly out of place topics.

Hmm.  I'd help, but saving files to disk wasn't one of the parts of PHP that I learned.

e: actually it looks more straightforward than I thought.  Were you going to pass the big blob of text to PHP via get/post params or what?

Well, opening a file is working, and writing a constant, but now it needs to be expanded to accept data from javascript without the javascript page closing/reloading. Also, write the recieved data to the specified filename.

Edit:

<?php
$n=0;
while(file_exists("G:\VN\" . $n))
{
    $n++;
}
$a=fopen("G:\VN\" . $n , 'w');
fwrite($a,"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?");
fclose($a);
?>
Eh?

Fails on line 7. No clue why. Used to fail on 4 when it also added a . ".txt"

No clue here either, but I used this utility a lot when I was learning PHP a couple years ago.  I guess you'll need the downloadable version to write local files.

I've been thinking about this.

I have reached a conclusion:
The best way is by making a worm, that may or may not be reproduce to the whole internet, which has a notification function, and I'll tell my inheritor to make the worm says 'PRAISE ALLAH! INDONESIAWARMINISTER IS DEAD!'

It will shook the internet, GLORIOUSLY... :grins:
