I have mixed feelings on the army. I'd probably opt out as a contentious objector but at the same time I see the necessity. Hell, a good friend of mine fought in three wars in the middle east and now works as a paramedic. He's a great man, and saved many lives.

So, if the army is something you want to do, go for it. But you need to be careful because as a Canadian (although I really don't know about this, I just assume you're supporting America) joining a part of the army involved in actual combat means you will be shot at and may kill someone or die. At the same time, this is totally your decision and all depends on your opinion. Just remember, if you're in the army, they do own you for a period of time and can make you do things you're uncomfortable with. Like kill people.

Not all people are pacifists, which in my personal opinion I don't understand why they are, but I believe that however someone feels or thinks is up to them.

Some people like to be a part of the army because they like the feeling that they are protecting those at home, some like the challenge and thrill of it, and some just like to vent their primal urges.

That reminds me of the idea of being an army medic. The standard pacifist line (in religious groups that are pacifist like Quakers or Mennonites which is what I'm from) is that you shouldnt' take part in the army in ANY way, since even if you're an army doctor you're still enabling the army to do its work, but I've never quite bought that. I'd probably be ok with being a medic or something. Not that I could, since I'm way too squeamish, but in principle.

Oh I wasn't saying that expecting everybody to share my philosophy, but I seriously can't get how anybody would be ok with signing the type of contract the army deals with - no matter what kind of organization it was for.

Depending on country, the army should pay better than most people and give you better training. It's unlikely to go into combat unless there's a war going on. You could also easily get a job in security after serving in the military too - this includes tech-based security.

And unless you're in the USA or North Korea army, it's quite a pacifist thing to join the army. Most armies are made with the intention to defend a country from attack, not to attack one. Having a small army encourages people to attack you, when everyone's army is about the same strength, it actually encourages peace.

I think there's worse things in army than getting shot at. For example, taking orders from people with half your IQ, which I imagine a good deal of NCOs are.

I think I'll move to Lichtenstein if I ever want to join the army and join theirs.

Plus, well, I'm a pacifist so joining a massively over-funded organization whose purpose is basically to control the world by force seems kinda wrong.

Here in Finland, conscientious objectors go to prison for 2 years! It's really lovely system...

Only two years? I mean I disagree with punishing COs being one myself but two years isn't going to convince anybody so it's completely pointless.

2 years, no chance for parole or shorter sentence. Compulsory military service is only half to one year, so it actually does convince many people. Especially when army can be used as qualification for many jobs, while 2 year prison sentence doesn't really help.

It's compulsory service. If it's anything like the one we had in Bosnia until recently, it's a month of basic training followed by half a year of loitering around the base being useless, broken up with occasional loitering around a guard-post being useless.

And I'd take war over prison any day of the week.

Hmm... 2 years of prison for those who refuse complusory military service, I really dunno the punishment if you refuse to serve in time of full mobilisation. Even those who do not have military training are required to serve then. Not that it is very likely we are going to be in war anytime soon, neutral country in EU without rescources and over 300 000 man army. And who are we going to attack? Sweden? Die you gay pirates, die!

Oh, and we also have civil service, can be done instead of military service. But that too takes longer than military service, so most men here just go to army.

Here in the Philippines, service in the armed forces is for volunteers, who fight not for money but the love of their country!

We don't have a very big army, in other words. Also it doesn't help that the average soldier's daily wage is slightly less than $4. US dollars.

Well, honourable kills, that is. Killing a non-combatant player character is no no.

Also, Indonesian military is a bit like Philipinnes. But we have reserves.

And... I'd probably join the New Caliphate, if someone really create it.
