Going Army?
« on: September 24, 2009, 09:03:47 pm »

I"m thinking about joining to pay for things and overall get some training and body building, but the main thing I'm not so sure about is that actuall job. From what I hear it's fairly straght forward, but the biggst question is that am I going actually be fighting? If you haven server'd or are serving could you please run down a list of what you do?

Probably should be in life advice.

Additionally, I'd like to make sure you know exactly where I'm coming from. If there was a draft I'd opt-out as a conscientious objector. I do not like war.

Having forewarned you, here is my opinion: Is your country of residence currently in a war? If yes, then you will likely face fighting. If not, you may enjoy the benefits that the job entails without the risks, which, depending on policies, may include basic education in a variety of arms and krav maga, a strict exercise regimen, and decent pay.

Many movies depict drill instructors as being people that, by necessity, bust your a** over and over until you get it right. As to the reality of that, I know not, but be mentally prepared to do what you believe is physically impossible if asked.

But if your country is in war, or will be in war, then there are two things you need to be prepared for before it becomes an issue: to kill and to die. Neither is inevitable, but neither is impossible.

Enemy gunfire?
Chances are you'll be fine though, I used to know someone in the army.

The biggest question is; if you were sent into battle, could you kill a man?

Don't do it don't do it don't do it

When you join the army, you literally sign your entire life over to them for whatever amount of time you agree to. They OWN YOU. Completely literally, they own you. And if for whatever reason they decide they want to ship you off to the desert to die...you're shit out of luck.

Plus, well, I'm a pacifist so joining a massively over-funded organization whose purpose is basically to control the world by force seems kinda wrong.

If all you want is training and body building, join a gym and get a personal trainer. You'll be in shape AND not be owned by a huge, soulless killing machine.

Humans kill get over it, humans are violent by nature. Everyone has the capacity to kill, and horribly mutilate another human being, we would not be here if we were not a violent race.

Back to the topic on hand, most people in the army never see any action or actual combat depending on their job. If you sign up as an infantry man hmm yea your gonna get shot at and you going to be shooting at people. If you sign up as say an intelligence officer then no. It all depends on what you do.

We also steal and rape by nature. Guess that makes those things OK too!

It's true. Still, it's up to you whether or not you want to give away ownership of your life or not.

Don't be so zealotous about it- the army sure isn't. I guess instead we should not have an army! We know the other guys won't hurt us, right? (Inb4 total discussion derailment about why who is fighting who, all humans are jerks)

At any rate, it's still probably not a good idea; avoid it. If you have to (IE: No decent career options), pick something that will teach you skills you'll be able to use when you're released from service. The big thing that ruins people's lives after the military (aside from PTSD or bullets) is that they've not given themselves any time left over for education and they're back to the desperate-for-work position that put them in the military in the first place.

That's a debate nobody can ever win. What counts for me though is that I would not join, and for any given other person, it's probably in their best interest not to join too, hence my advice.

Whether or not just wars exist...whatever. Another interminable argument. You've got a good case with world war 2, although probably not much else. Anyway, it's besides the point, it's not what this thread is about.

Basically. Sure they give you money for education. But just get scholarships or loans, get the education by yourself and you'll be just as well off.

If you're in to electronics and the like, making equipment for the Navy or Air Force (at least in America) can get you some good training without fear of combat. (They need to keep their smart people alive)

Oh it's definitely true that people with technical skills/social class don't get sent to the front lines. That's reserved for poor people and minorities...another reason to wash your hands of the military.

As a former grunt in the US Army, i can tell you that the army is mostly a support mechanism.  For its sheer size, only a very small amout are actually combat personel.  That being said, it is possible to be caught in combat while providing support, but that means that a:  someone screwed up or b:  someones in trouble and the support must go, period.

If you want a cool combat job without the bullets, go for the "Kings of Battle".  Artillery rulz.  Just bring ear plugs.  Lots and Lots of ear plugs.

And yes, they own you.  Why this would seem unusual to someone, I dont understand.

Dont worry about the Drill's Sgt.'s.  By the end of basic training, you will be having the time of your life.
Also, the army will TRAIN you do do all kinds of things, and any civilian company with a brain will take a retired vet over a green college grad anyday of the week.  Heck, it will take an NCO with four years service over a college grad any day of the week.  Now I know someone will say, "but the army wont teach you "x" tech skill" or whatever, and no, it wont teach every "x" tech skill you can think of, but a company will hire you to be the "x" skill guys boss since you will have developed leadership training and proven your ability to manage very difficult tasks under very difficult circumstances.  Plus the schooling is great - Army vets get more school monies from the Gov than any other branch, all military get special home buying breaks.  Many colleges are offering up to 1 free year for service men and women now.  But, yes, you must be willing to attach yourself to something greater than yourself and be a part of something that affects the real everyday lives of people around the world.

Wow jude, do you actually believe your delusions?  how long have you lived in this fantasy world?  I strongly suggest disconnecting your tv for awhile and going outside to see how the world really works

Actually, the point I was attempting to make was that the Air Force, after deciding on a plan to entirely unman every plane, needs people that are good at robotics and electronics to make the new Drones and their controls.

Your point is good too, although it's more of a conjecture. (Teddy Roosevelt was in the front lines with his battalion, and he belonged to one of the upper class families of New York City.) Things have probably changed though.

The idea here is that the army is going to want to make you work for the service. Instead, you want to make the service work for you. (Same is true for any group or corporation.) Your job is to make the compromise, to choose what you gain and what you give up; what they gain and what they give up. Choose wisely. Figure out where you want to belong.

Deployment isn't a sure thing, but you should definitely assume that you will be deployed, and in the worst conditions for your job--don't get caught up by the glitz. At the same time, if you don't love (or at least like!) what you're doing, it'll be nothing but years of crap. As above, find a balance.

I've got my qualms against the arguments presented against joining, but I'd like to keep this more-or-less on topic, so I'll let it slide.

yep I believe 'em. And if you're gonna call them "delusions" it would probably be a good idea to point out how they're not the truth.
