Site Maybe Not Very Special, But Interesting
« on: September 24, 2009, 07:31:46 pm »

I was trying out Iituem's plant mod in a world made with parameters I got from a thread about a huge waterfall.  I happened to notice a pink symbol which the Wiki page on map legends says mean a goblin fortress.  In the local map it looked quite large, so I embarked there just out of curiosity.

The quarter of the map with the fortresses has three fort-type buildings made of obsidian, and one smaller arena-type one made of olivine.  There is also a 18-level waterfall on the brook which descends into a sharply-defined notch in the land.

The reverse view shows the higher ground where the Dwarves embarked arrived, with the higher portion of the brook.

The forts were occupied by friendly Humans who did not seem to mind my Dwarves setting up stockpiles inside their buildings and even mining their rooftop fortification for obsidian.  The forts are only two stories high, though, and the site is otherwise unremarkable, so I doubt that I will continue there.

Oh, and those two large white patches nearby the forts are rock salt.

Thats not so uncommon. You see things like that once in a while due to worldgen events, check legends mode and you'll probably find out why, but here's some reasons and answers.

1-Goblin towers right now aren't actualy towers made of obsidian block walls like they should be. Instead they're made of natural obsdian and almost never have more then 3 z levels above the ground, sometimes they even have more underground levels, plus you'll often see 2 to 4 "towers" in a single site. This will be fixed in the future, me thinks.

2-The humans probably conquered that site during a worldgen war, or the whole civilization.

3-Those humans may actualy be snatched human babies that had enough time to grow in the goblin civ, the goblins could've died in wars.

4-The mode you're using probably changed something in the civ raws causing humans to live in goblin settlements.

2 seems to be the most likely one, since apparently there isn't even a single goblin around.

Yes, but olivine?

Humans use wood, except for when they build castles or temples, in which case they use the dominant local stone. So why is there a random olivine building?

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

I think the olivine building may be a cistern. There is almost always a cistern of some sort in a dark fortress.

Temples and castles are always made of stone, and humans will use any random local stone.  It's shops and houses they use wood for.  Those cisterns are actually the bottoms of temples, and sometimes, if the temple's sphere involves fire or something to that nature, you find magma in them instead.  This is why there are often engravings of deities and historical events around the cisterns.

No, the mod is only to matgloss_plants.

I decided to use reveal to peek under the cistern, and there is nothing but slate there.  However, there is adamantine thread and an eerie glowing pit under that corner of the map.  There are floor engravings of a rather noxious nature, and two tiny magma pools, and I do mean tiny.  One is only three squares.  No one would live long enough to use it, anyway.  The engravings are pretty specific on that.   :o

So, the place isn't as mundane as I thought.  I still don't think I want to play it out.   :)

You may want to put that paragraph within spoiler tags.
