Character Sprite
« on: September 24, 2009, 04:52:21 pm »

-Original-

I am working on this character and I finally got the walking animation done. I wanted to know how it looks. Don't try to sugar-coat anything. Also, I used a Maplestory character as a reference(it's shiny).

Also, I'm fixing the arm so it doesn't look broken. Update'd

Looks good. The characters right arm is bigger than his left though, even though it's further back. And his feet appear to be facing horizontally even though the rest of the character is on a diagonal. It does look really good though, other than that.

I wish I could do that.... anyways, like kinseti said, the right arm looks a little big, and the feet look like they're at a different angle (although I think that's mostly just the shading, cause they look the right size to me...).  Something else I may add, if you get the chance I'd suggest adding another frame or two, to smooth it out a bit.  That being said, it looks freaking awesome!

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

Fixing the arms and legs.

Also, timmeh, I suck at animation, so I copied sorta how the legs are from the Maplestory character. So it would be difficult for me to add anymore frames. :(

And thanks! (definatelynotanedit)

EDIT:
-Edit 1-
-HAAA-
I lazily reshaded and moved the feet to see if that would do any better. Also, here's the character standing still.

You probably can't see the foot edit because it's all blurry and ugly(forum's fault). :(

References and tutorial

The 'contact' is the most important frame and sets the stage for the rest of the animation.

You should exaggerate the arms a lot more as they swing.

You should bring the character down at the 'recoil', walking can be described as controlled falling and at the 'recoil' your body is catching itself, thus the knees are bent.

All organic animation is curved, notice if you follow the top of the head it has a wavy pattern. Also, observe the arcs that the arms make at the highest point of movement. Curves, curves curves.  Looking at your animation there are hardly any curves, and thus it doesn't really look organic.

I've seen that tutorial so many times...

I haven't actually been able to follow it. I'll try it.

EDIT: I keep getting anxious when I try to place a pixel. :( I'm going to keep it as it is, right now, and just keep editing it until it's good.

EDIT:
-Edit 3-
Another alteration.

Yet Another blah da blah...

I think, if he's running, the arms should keep going until the fists are above the elbows.

Aside from the fact that his arms look like he's walking and the feet look like he's running, it's epic. If he's supposed to be walking, feet shouldn't go as high and arms should stay as they are.

The sprites I've been uploading go faster than how I see them on GraphicsGale, so I thought it was more of a jog.
-Original(Duck)
I also made a ducking animation... it looks like he's raping himself. :\
(Again, faster than I thought it would be. :( )

This any better?

Very good! The walking animation is just about perfect- maybe a few pixels of body movement or tilt, but that's nitpicky to the max. Good job!

I don't think that's how most people duck though- if he's a Muslim, then the animation makes more sense. ;)

For the walking pose... I somehow feel that his knee is kinda iffy. Probably nothing, but it looks slightly wierd.

The crouch... With the guy's arms it looks like he is trying to do the choo-choo train. Make one of his arms touch the ground, like support when you do a fast crouch. Bring the knee that faces upwards when he crouches more closer to his face. That makes him crouch lower.

The swing is just... Looks like he is going to hi-five some one then rubs them in the belly instead.
Violently.

I knew there were problems with the last two. :S I just didn't know where to place the arms. I removed the bent arm part of the swing, but I don't know where to place the arm on that one, too.

Is this the animation for a certain class/character, or is the base?

Because if you are trying to get the animation for a nimble, ninja/whatever type character then look up parkour on youtube. Sometimes they will have side shots and you match from there.
