Things that remind you of DF
« on: September 23, 2009, 08:49:14 pm »

So, today I saw this animation and immediately thought of DF.

A little bit too bright and happy, but I still think it sums up the spirit nicely.

Post the things that remind you of DF below, books, movies, animations, whatever.

That animation was beautiful.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

The book I'm reading is called the Secret of Pax Tharkas. It's based in the Dragonlance universe and part of the Dwarf Home trilogy. The exploits of the protagonist sound like a power goal for DF.

I read an article about stray cats being rounded up from Japan and being shipped off over to China where they were eaten. Someone commented on it, saying that 'while wrong from most people's points of view, it's acceptable in China, and it deals with the overpopulation of cats."

Sadly, I thought of Dwarf Fortress immediately, then felt bad about myself.

Actually that hillside settlement thing also reminded me of Dwarf Fortress when I first saw it.

Reading wikipedia and ending up on geology for some unknown reason. 'Hey, I recognise that stone from DF!'
The last one was olivine. Which, strangely enough, makes no mention of it being used in road surfaces to hide the vomit.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

That video reminds me of Knud Hamsun's Growth of the Soil which is a great novel about a guy building something out of nothing like that.  The main character is very dwarfy and ends up founding a whole community.

I've been tinkering with a "dwarven" conlang for about, oh...15 years now. Always on the hunt to expand the lexicon, I've found myself working on a greater range of vocabulary for types of rock and underground agriculture. I've also introduced "Urist" as a given name.

On the flipside of that, I've slowly been working on converting over the lang files in DF to use my conlang instead of the default one. Part of the problem is that "my" dwarves are a little different--they've never seen the surface. Ever. So there's a lot of vocabulary they lack, and their entire cosmology is different.
