I think lying to children is not harmful in certain situations. Certainly Santa was an entertaining idea for a while.

But lying to them to stifle sexual growth and at the same time claiming homosexuality is a bad thing will breed bigots and is, quite frankly, disgusting. It's like claiming that watching porn or being an atheist will make you black.

I did say lying about serious issues - I agree, there's no problem with telling your kids the story of Santa or the Easter Bunny.

Another thing - I've been taught that your sexuality is, by and large, out of your control - and resisting/denying it leads to BAD THINGS. Doesn't this kind of sentiment only encourage these BAD THINGS in children who already have enough to deal with?

I'm surprised nobody else has quoted it, so I will, because I found it quite prescient.  The logic behind "porno turns people gay, even straight porno", as broken down by Jon Stewart - "Watching this makes me want to touch my penis.  Perhaps I would also enjoy touching other people's penises."

Not really. It depends on the stimuli (loving that word). If you're watching heterosexual pornography, then masturbation is natural and certainly won't make you gay unless you actually are gay, in which case it still won't make you gay but it doesn't matter by that point.

Personally i've never seen the point of lying to children, unless the children are my siblings and i'm bored.

Sad, but true. There are a few authors of the Bible I'd really like to punch, but at the same time I understand that humanity was very, very different back then.

We'll if you think about religion as a sort of arms race it all makes sense. You want to have as many believers in your faith as possible, and since two men cannot biologically have a child it is evil.

The rules nowadays have changed though: if you have an accepting faith that pops up and discriminates between no one, I'm sure that you'll have the fastest growing religion on the planet. The key factor here is the drop in baby births within first world countries means that you want spread over birthrate, and the internet helps spread things at an alarming pace.
