Really though, I think you are trying to say "Half the people in America have an IQ of 100 or less", which is true. Sadly, the way you say "average intelligence" implies a global standard, and a fair percentage of the world is still so uneducated that they wouldn't even score on an IQ test. Nobody knows what the "average intelligence" of the world is, and there's a fair bit of argument on how intelligence should even be measured. So yeah, bollocks statistic. And I'm not even American.

I did of course mean the average intelligence of people in America, otherwise the joke doesn't work.

I was trying to say exactly what i said; that America, and everywhere else, does not have a majority of people who are considered 'Intelligent' as intelligence is usually rated by comparison to other people (thus getting a rough average). You cannot have a majority of people who are of above-average intelligence and thus considered to be Intelligent (especially since if you're smart enough to make people notice and remark on your intelligence, you're noticably above the average, otherwise they wouldn't notice!)

OK, now I see the problem.

To qualify as 'Intelligent' you have to be of above average Intelligence.

"Intelligent" is a quality, not a measurement. I can be a hockey player without being an above average hockey player.

Why are we even talking about this? I guess there's only so much to be said  on the "gay-bashing and lying to kids is bad" subject.

If we are talking about an average here, it DOES NOT mean that half is above and half is below. If you have about 90% who are dumb, and 10% who are extremely smart, the 10% would raise the average above the other 90%, meaning 90% would be below average. Anyway, if we are talking about average intelligence, the only thing a high % below/above average intelligence would mean is that there is a large disparity in intelligence, not that lots of people are smart/dumb.

Almost half voted Republicans and over half didn't vote Democrats, It's quite reliable census to say ~half of the americans are under average intellect. xD

Barring cheap political shots, it would depend on what kind of average.  If we're talking median average, then yes, exactly half of people will be under average.

Well, it is usually said americans are less intelligent when compared to europeans or canadians, so I think it should be average of all those people? And it's not usually really much about intelligence, more about Americans being ignorant. Given the poor education system, I have no trouble believing that on average it is true, but saying every American is stupid(or even every Republican is), it's clearly false.
