An extract from the diaries of "Sava" Bomrekalan.Day 1. We have arived to the location that our scouts call "heaven". It looks like a fairly decent spot to start a new outpost, although it lacks one major thing. Flux. There is Obsidian all over the place, and it's pretty valuable back at home so i suppose we won't have too much trouble buying the things we need from a caravan. On our way here we discovered a cave, to our suprise it was filled with, instead of monsters, trinkets. We don't want to go inside yet for fear of any hidden beasts. As i write our miners have already begun mining a tunnel in the hill, i suppose i should go join them.
Day 11. I looked at the map of the region that our scouts provided us with (

3rd felsite, year 201. Our carpenter made a masterpiece! The willow bed was then put into my room, and the walls were smoothed, i shall have to make do with this small comfort until we are sufficiently established in the mountain to provide me with proper accommodations.
26th Felsite, year 201. We have found hematite! also, we have finally completed the sleeping quarters. My room now sports a gabbro chest, the masterpiece bed, and an olivine cabinet. I am quite content.
22nd Galena, year 201. I have not written anything in my journal for I have been very busy with work. We have finished digging out a quarter of the work area, and the bedrooms and dining room are complete. The announcment of summer reminded me that soon the dwarven caravan will come, so i have told our useless metal worker to repeatedly make stone goods, hopefully we will be able to buy an anvil for him. Rhesus macaques have started plundering the scattered goods around the caves. i am worried that by the time we settle in and are fit to send some military in there all will be gone. Upon further examination we realize the value of the scattered goods. lots of them are masterpiece and some of them are made from expensive metals like aluminum and horn silver. I cannot write further, for duty calls and i have to start working on the food preparation areas.
20th Sandstone, year 201. Some migrants have arrived! we've gained a mason, a plant gatherer, 4 recruits
, and a trapper.
15th Moonstone, Year 201. A vile force of orcs has arrived! i can't write much for i must hurry to safety!
15th Opal, Year 201. They've been here for a month now. yesterday we made a crossbow and 50 bolts with the last pieces of wood that we had, we dug some fortifications into the hill above them, and fired away. we managed to kill 6 of them. The other 10 are waiting outside our gates. how long will they stand there? I do not fear us running out of food, for we have about 200 of it, and same with the precious, precious, booze. The only bad thing is that production has greatly slowed down, with no wood/gathering/farmimg almost half of us are lounging about, doing absolutely nothing. I must go back to my study now, and see if i can think of a way to get these monsters away from us.
Captain Akiagak's LogThe coward Sava is hiding in the back of the fort, and I have assumed control for the next year to sort our defenses, as our current ones are jokes, that even an Orc finds funny.
First: The 'Orc Trap' is completely ineffective; not only does it rely on the orcs coming in a really tight group, but if we manage to trap them then we can't kill them, as the only firing holes are on the side of the trap closest to the rest of the valley.
Second: I don't know what Sava was planning when he had a little labyrinth dug out under the barracks, as the entrance to it is opposite the entrance to the barracks. The exit is actually in the barracks. By Rinul's Mutterings, what was he thinking?
Third: Levers. He might have stuck a note to each one saying what it does, by there is nothing logical about their placement.
Time to get to work. I've raised the bridge to give us time to work.
