Creature Naming
« on: September 23, 2009, 02:34:33 am »

I don't know if this has been suggested before but I didn't find one after a quick search so

The point is whenever I see Magma man or ratman it always reminds me of superhero
Could it be renamed as something that is more...... older like
Ratman become Rodentus or Homo rattus
Antman become Aenictus or Aenictus sapien
Magma man become Homo magmatus

A ratman, a combination of a rat and a man.

I see no problem.

Pseudo-latin is not the way to go here.

No, I don't think this is a very good idea. I don't have much of a problem with changing names such as 'iron man' or 'magma man', because they kind of suck. On the other hand, labeling creatures with bullshit psuedo-scientific names like in your example is not the way to go, since it'll draw players out of immersion and doesn't even sound good. I personally would prefer the names to be altered to something that sounds mythical, but not stupid at the same time; a good example would be how one of the mods changed 'iron man' to 'iron golem'.

Also, in line with the post above me: what in god's name is "magmatus"?

Word of God is that the animal man names serve as a good grounding for the later weird shit.  People might not know what Nagas or Kitsune or Corax are, and that would be bad when there are REALLY random creatures out there.

Note:
for the animal men that have better names, I'm pro using them, but I'm a mythology geek, so I know them all anyway.

If latin is deemed appropriate to DF, which I don't expect it will be I'd go with

rattus sapiens
formicidae sapiens
homo vulcans*

* or whatever the correct form of the word would be.

Aenictus is not the most recognizable family of ants.  Magmatus isn't latin at all.

Better would be to make up names and fluff for everything without a mythological origin.

Best would be to autogenerate them at worldgen.  (eg guarantee the existance of a rat god in some pantheon and name rat men minions of [rat god])

I like the [animal] men names.  They're simple, descriptive, and easy to understand.  Changing them is also a very easy mod, so if they bother you that much, it's quite simple to adjust them.

No Latin names.  It wouldn't make sense in a setting where nobody speaks, or ever spoke, Latin.  Names that sound less like comic book characters would be fine, as long as they made sense in setting.  I just figure we see the names translated into English for the player's benefit, though.

Would you prefer atemudos to ratman?

Latin (or any foreign or ancient language in general) does not belong in DF, unless it's used as names of beasts or objects that have no name in English except that of that language.  Ballista would be a good example for Latin; Hydra, for Greek.

Personally I conceive of every different world as having its own different language, of which English is merely a representation, like English was for the Common Tongue in LotR Middle-Earth.  DF critters definitely don't speak Latin, and representing an unknown language with another foreign language (especially one as far removed from ours as Latin) makes no sense whatsoever.

And so,

A ratman, a combination of a rat and a man.

I see no problem.

The latin names is only alternative example
We can make it simple, ratman become rodentian (rodent + tian)
And yeah magma golem sounds much better

Toady should replace Man with Folk.

Currently it's sexist.

Yeah, the race would be Ratfolk, individuals would be Rat Man and Rat Woman.
