So I just found this today as I was roaming around.

North Korean traffic officers controlling vehicles at intersections instead of lights. It's amazing how well co-ordinated they are all the time.

I prefer police directors at intersections over lights, just because it's obvious that they can see the dude blazing down the other road at sixty with no intention of stopping and can tell me not to start crossing unless I wanna get creamed.

The advantage of people controlling the traffic is that they can use their judgement to realise that there is no-one on the goddamn road going the other way so you can change now and let me cross it you stupid fucking lights.

The disadvantage is that, being people, they're more prone to errors, and soforth.


Although the little march to switch shifts made me giggle a little.

This is the youtube with playlists showing people giving and receiving piggyback rides. And feet stamping various stampable objects. And people filling their bellies with air to make them look and sound like balloons. And watching women smoking.

 I'm honestly not terribly surprised at this.

 And you know what transportation engineers? Why don't you install those magnetic car sensors under all the stoplight roads? That will give a good amount of jobs to replace all those roads and make our roads more efficient. We can do this America!

It's cheaper in a country where technology is expensive, but a disciplined military is cheap, I guess. Unlike in first world countries, where you have to pay a guy like $10 per hour to stand there. They do it in Malaysia at rush hour, because traffic police are better than dumb lights. People cause jams by running red lights at rush hour too; I think the traffic police helps unjam intersections, or at least scare the people from doing that. Traffic officers make less errors than mindless traffic lights

Actually mindless traffic lights make no errors at all, unless they break or are tampered with. They do exactly what they were programmed to do.

It's just that sometimes what they were programmed to do isn't the ideal in a given situation.

Well, they do make mistakes. I know some traffic lights which stay stuck on red forever.. some light up on green while the other one is green. It's probably illegal, but hey, that's why I think a lot of people aren't doing their job or are getting bribed a lot. Not to mention a culture which prefers to buy new stuff instead of maintaining old ones.

But yeah, that wasn't my point Yeah, I meant that lights didn't do the ideal. But I don't think there's any mistakes to be made by a traffic officer. The worst they could do is tell someone to go during a non-ideal time, but a traffic officer has a far better perspective on what's ideal and what's not than a traffic light.

Obviously it doesn't work all the time, but I have a far broader definition of an error- namely, something stupid that a machine does. I do truly not believe that there are no bugs, only 'undocumented features'. If it fails to fulfill its intended function, it's not working. Which is error enough.

Yeah, I was pointing to the part where you said that they "do what they were programmed to do". Any electrical engineer worth his salt knows that circuits screw up a lot. There's so many problems with electronics with all the types of noise, EM, randomness, sudden spikes, and much of the electronics you find in a big circuit is just to make sure that they don't make errors.

On the other hand, people don't make as many mistakes. But people are a lot more expensive than mindless machinery (in some countries).

A little off topic, but I'm anal about correcting people who think that "computers don't make mistakes, humans make computer mistakes"
