Seems like everyone here has forgotten that dwarf beards naturally filter air to make it re-breathable.

The Implementationof an air ventilation system could be highly abstracted, such as not needing any flow calculations etc.

smoke going up in chimneys would be way cool, and easy to implement and calculate for the computer. a more generic airflow could be done by dividing the amount of air in am area with the number of creatures in it, and comparing this to a generic "air intake value", coming from built vents and doors.

So for a small cave, say about 20x20, the air intake given by the door of 100 would not really sufice for more than 10 creatures. so to create a bigger cave an air vent would be needed which would allow for the creation of a bigger unit fortress. so this would be a static figure depending on the numbers of entries into the montain aswell as the size of the cave/fort.

I'd prefer the addition of firedamp before having to worry about fresh air.  Bad air > fresh air.  Explosive bad air is GREATLY > fresh air.

I am not entirely sure if dwarves do need oxigen.

A simple way would be to just pathfind from the nearest outdoor square once a week or just once a month. 50 squares in, air becomes stale, 100 squares in it becomes unbreathable. Doors (closed) and windows counting as 10 squares per quality multiplier.

An airshaft down the middle of the fort would provide air for everything within a 50 square radius, locked doors and closed off rooms not withstanding. Maybe fans powered by axles and gearboxes) would give an additional 50 square radius around the fan, allowing to propel fresh air over a long 200 square long air tunnel if necessary.

Magma, fires on the other hand would generate smoke, which would rise, evaporate into an unbreathable air which would pathfind outward. A chimney (fresh air source) would counteract this.

yeh thinks like furnaces and forges need chimmenys cause they consume oxygen and its a good way to create traps is jsut lock people in a room and leave them eventualy they will start takeing damage to their lungs and die.. also happens  odwarves if they dont ventalate it enough.. becuase regardless wether they liek being underground better they need oxygen to live..

Perhaps allow for the creation of small amounts of stale or 'foul air' by living creatures then simply exposing it to the outside would make it dissipate like miasma. Then allow for miasma, foul air, smoke, ect to be channeled of pumped out of the fortress. Instead of demanding flows for all air simply demand flows of unusual (unpleasant, or toxic or even flavorful like incense, tobacco ect) air where it may actually have an effect.

Oh thats just great. Just great. You realize what happens then? It starts out just fine. But then you realize that although yes, every dwarf eats... they breathe a lot more. So naturally, the fastest and cheapest way to keep everyone happy is to fill the air with high quality smells.

So suddenly, instead of being strange creatures who balance out at "happy" because on one hand their wife was eaten by elephants and on the other they just ate in a REALLY NICE dining room, they because druggies. "Well, I guess I'm kinda mad but *inhale* whoa.. dude, you know, what? Dude."

Watch your entire fortress crumble as they go through a cultural revolution and refuse to work for a living or fight their enemies. Next thing you know they start having sing alongs and flower power circles with elves. Lord forbid the fort runs out of -Minced Red Spotted Mushrooms- you will have a fort full of dwarves who desperately need that fix!

I like this part of the suggestion, at least for workshops. The calculation could be made pretty simple:
A tile either has smoke or does not. Fueled workshops produce 1 unit of smoke for every item created. The next unit of smoke is always generated in the nearest tile with no smoke in it. If the top of the workshop is connected to the outside air, the smoke is not generated in the fort, but instead generated in either the shaft or the air above the shop (whatever is closest). Smoke is not generated if it reaches 3 tiles of open (above surface with no walls touching it) air. It would probably be wise for smoke to "expire" every so many turns.

So, if you build a workshop with a smokestack and it is in continuous use, the stack will always be full of smoke and have a 2x2 plume coming out the top. If you don't, your fort will slowly fill with smoke and give bad thoughts as well as possibly suffocate.

This would also allow early forts to get away with not having ventilated workshops, because as long as they aren't being used, they won't generate any smoke. Once production goes full-bore, shafts (or being built on the surface) will become a requirement.
