The year is 51 B.C.. Caesar and his legions are finishing up the Gallic wars and forcing the last tribes into capitulation. The Senate grows worried at the large and devoted army Julius Caesar has and scheming and plotting against his power has begun. Pompey and Caesar are the the last two living members of the First Triumvirate- since the unifying Crassus has perished the two have begun to drift apart.

However, little of that matters to you, slave. You are a gladiator in a middling settlement in Cisalpine Gaul, having just been carted in and sold to your masters for the sport of free citizens. You may have been a captured barbarian, a debtor, a farmer, thief, a priest or shaman, or even the son of an equites or soldier; all of that (perhaps) matters little now.

The Senate and People of Rome demand you fight for their amusement and your own life.

(6) Overshot- A likely Pyrrhic victory.

Slaves filter into your dank cells, and forcefully lead you out to a dark room, the cloying smell of death and rotting flesh heavy in the air. A table full of broken and rusty weapons is here, from which you barely manage to grab some. Turyk, a colossal man wearing naught but an amethyst-studded loincloth and a gigantic warhammer, his hair bound up in a topknot, scowls at you all. "I'm Turyk, the head trainer and personal bodyguard of Quintus Terranus, the man who fuckin' owns all you. Now, you're lucky in that you're all ludii but still will probably die to the bestiarii today. At least some of you might make it to Gert and Rindclaw to let him warm up. Assuming any of you novii manage to fuckin' live I might make real fuckin' gladiators outta you fucks.

He snorts, and pushes open the doors. You're herded out at spear point into the center of a sandy arena, blinking in the daylight sun. You manage to get a look at the thin crowd, but your attention is soon drawn to a pack of thin, starved-looking and drooling mongrel dogs.

First turn, cue actions. Die with honor, gladiators!
