The scientist had two full magazines and no gun. It's possible the gun is still worthwhile against these things.

Then again, the gun back in the first hallway was empty and had an empty mag. Which suggests it was fired. With no dead enemies nearby we can probably assume it didn't work.

Metal walls - no bullet holes.

We should really aviod injecting the syringe guys, if it werea good thing the scientist would have done it already to himself.

The character might be Chinese for cold/lonely. But it looks like it was written mirrored. I'm fairly confident that it's mirrored and rotated slightly because the small t-shaped symbol suggests it.

EDIT: No, that's not it. I don't read kanji and it's hard to find something by its shape. And various sources give me different kanji for a translation of "cold" and for "lonely" every single time. So after checking 3 sites I have 6 kanji that apparently mean cold or lonely and none are the same, or even close to what's drawn on the floor.

Anyway, I guess all I can offer is that we know one of the scientists (or the monster) is a native user of kanji.

If they were drawn by a finger as opposed to splashed/dropped that way by coincidence, we should be able to tell upon close inspection.
