Starfish-like Monsters
« on: September 20, 2009, 09:43:50 pm »

I was wondering if there would ever be creatures like Starfish, where if they had an arm or leg chopped off, it would not only regenerate, but the chopped off arm or leg would become an entirely new creature given enough time.

It's probably not necessary, but I think asexual reproduction in certain creatures seems like a really interesting concept to me.

This sound potentially awesome. Imagine it running through a field of weapon traps. Maybe a new variety of HFS?

I'm sort of curious if this hasn't already been worked in as a possibility among the new wound and healing system. "Can be grown back" tags on organs and tissues, a system for determining how -fast- things grow back, is all we'd need...

Although, the whole "creating a new creature from a piece of another" thing might take some work.

EDIT: Another point- for this to be feasible, as in not breaking any laws of physics feasible, whatever part grows into a new creature would require a full set of functioning organs, in particular, a digestive tract; that is, supposing it consumes rather than produces its own food. What about photosynthesis? Perhaps certain plants, or parts of them, could one day be sliced (and not so much diced) and then cultivated.

IIRC right now true regeneration isn't possible due to a number of factors, but don't quote me on that.

Once the new anatomy system's been put through the grinder, we might see alterations that allow this sort of behavior.

I think bifurcating the creature's history file is the biggest obstacle, one that I'm sure Toady can accomplish.  It would be cool if such a creature had a religious/ethical priority for self-mutilation.

The other interesting thing is the way starfish eat.
They simply throw up their stomach over their prey and draw it back in.

You could have the hydra actually regrow heads! Awesome...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Subterranean Worms anyone? Each segment takes up one tile and can (re)grow additional segments.
Now that would be cool.
Of course they would avoid your fort due to vibrations. Or maybe be attracted to it : 3 ??
