That's what I've heard generally.

I think a while ago one of the leading models was that a roughly Mars-sized planet smashed into Earth, spat out a ring of debris, and then the debris coalesced into the moon. Computer modelling was used.

Theia /ˈθiːə/ is a hypothesized ancient planet in the early Solar System that, according to the 'giant-impact hypothesis', collided with the early Earth around 4.5 billion years ago.[1][2] According to one hypothesis, Theia was an Earth trojan about the size of Mars, with a diameter of about 6,102 km (3,792 miles). Models of the impact indicate that Theia's debris gathered around Earth to form the early Moon.

The Theia hypothesis also explains why Earth's core is larger than would be expected for a body its size: according to the hypothesis, Theia's core and mantle mixed with Earth's.[3] Additional evidence published in 2019 suggests that Theia might have formed in the outer Solar System rather than the inner Solar System, and that much of Earth's water originated on Theia.[4]

So it sounds like Earth got its water from a Mars-sized Kupier belt object (like the biggest comet ever) impacting it, as well as getting the Moon.

Interestingly, the modelling suggests that Theia could have been in one of the Lagrange points for Earth, co-orbiting the sun, but was perturbed out of that orbit by Venus or Jupiter's gravitational effects. It collided with Earth no faster than 4 km/s, which is practically standing still on a cosmic scale. Since it was co-orbiting and drifted out of the stable configuration it didn't have a great velocity relative to Earth. This is obviously far more likely than being hit by a Mars-sized object that's just come out of nowhere.

So without the gravitational influence of Jupiter and others, there could have been two habitable planets circling the same sun?
Cosmically, that seems remarkable. Thoigh I suppose we don't know if it was in the Goldilocks zone?

On the right side of Jupiter you can see Io, Europa, Ganymede. On the left side, fainter and further away, Callisto

Apparently Jupiter wants Earth dead, so it hired a hit man to kill her, but the hit man fell in love with Earth and switched sides, and then Earth ate him?
