Switch to ancient Sumerian glyphs today!
I like how architects found an ancient Sumerian tablet that ended up being a bad yelp review towards a copper salesman

I passed my driving test. I am convinced that it was by luck I passed.

Ah, I remember that feeling. Well, it was more mild disbelief because I had been behind the wheel at that point only like twice prior to the test and never had driving classes or anything more than one vaguely instructional drive that basically boiled down to "oh hey, turns out video games actually do teach you most of what you need to know to drive!"* but eh. That feeling you really shouldn't be passing a test you pass anyway is one well known to me :P

* I owe my first three point turn to mario kart, no joke.

My drivers test was actually taken at my high school, they had a drivers ed elective and since the school cancelled every elective I was interested in that semester* I took it.

I aced the written portion. I got a 98 on the driving portion (I forgot a signal during the parallel park.)  I still didn't feel I deserved to be allowed to control a 2000 pound pile of metal powered by explosions.

* Computer programming 2, cancelled.(for the second semester in a row too)  Ok we'll just funnel everyone into intro to robotics.  Oh nevermind thats cancelled too.

Sometimes I am reminded not everyone has to pilot a 2000lb death wagon on a daily basis just to make ends meet.

I actually have an interview lined up for a delivery driver job.
What a wacky world we live in.

My driving instructor told me that I should have failed because I basically tripped an instant failure condition, but I was really lucky because the examiner just didn't notice and let me go on as if nothing happened. I have truly been blessed by RNGesus. Or maybe I'm just good at bullshitting.

some testers are aware that most people dont drive according to the manual.  i very doubt i could easily switch into driving according to the maunal . . . . lets see:

- I speed on the highway
- I speed on the backroads
- I make rolling stops at signs
- I take illegal rights and (more rarely) illegal lefts
- I dont check my tires prior to entering my vehicle
- I sometimes neglect to wear a belt
- The lines on the road are 'optimal suggestions'
- I eat fruit in my car and read my phone from time to time
- Ive been told I break too fast
- though I can back up like a champ, parallel parking is my weak point
- a three point what?

I can relate to this much
I wish people didn't tailgate me into speeding, though.  It's anxiety-inducing.

also three point turns are easy, but I suspect I'm usually doing them illegally

I have not parallel parked since... my driving test something like 19 years ago.  I also do not check the whole car before entering the vehicle (does anyone?) My driving test was done with a manual transmission but I have not driven a manual in at least a decade.  I will sometimes change lanes mid turn (In my defense I only do so if it's safe and where I do it regularly, my destination is an immediate right turn after a left on a road where the lines would stick you in the middle lane so at that turn there is basically no other option)

...I still remember hand signals though, so that's something.  Probably just because of all the motorcyclists that don't have signals built into their bikes.

I passed my driving test. I am convinced that it was by luck I passed.

Congratulations. The first time I took mine, I was nervous. I did pretty well, but they failed me partly because they usually fail first-time test takers, and partly because I apparently turned too sharp making a left turn. I now notice about 80% of drivers doing that, because I'm hyper aware of it even a couple decades later. I felt okay about the second attempt, but failed because I did not use a turning lane. In my defense, there had been a blizzard the night before, and I couldn't see that there was a turning lane. Passed the third try.

I wish people didn't tailgate me into speeding, though.  It's anxiety-inducing.

It helps if you have a calming drink or 6 before getting behind the wheel.

Aren't the hand signals the same as using the turn signal in a car? Right turn is up, left turn is down?

I always assumed it was like bicycles - forearm up means right turn, straight outstretched means left turn, down means slowing/caution.
(For driving on the right side of the road, and thus using the left arm)

Huh. I have seen straight out used as not turning (because not enough people use signals that you can just assume people know what they're doing if they aren't signaling) as well, but it looks like your version is the more correct one. It's probably bad if there are multiple meanings for the same set of signals.

I remember the booklet explaining the hand signals, then saying that if your lights are working you have to use those instead of hand signals, then saying that you need working lights to use the vehicle.
