Actually... you're half wrong. I checked and it turns out there *are* wild tortoises in Poland

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reptiles_of_Poland

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_pond_turtle

I'm surprised. I assumed the weather would not be turtle-friendly

Being a bit pedantic, but turtles aren't tortoises*. Aside from the aquatic vs non-aquatic stuff turtles and terrapins can be found in more places than tortoises. Not sure why, maybe the more carnivorous diet of many turtles is better suited to colder climates than the more herbivorous diet of tortoises, maybe the aquatic lifestyle helps temperature regulation.

In any case, you can find turtles basically anywhere, even Russia and Canada have native turtle populations, tortoises are much more restricted in range.

*Though tortoises are technically turtles.

In my tongue, there are only shield-toads, who wage war upon the soil-of-earth, and water shield-toads, who wage war in the lake-and-sea.

In the grimdark world of the turtle, there is only war

I know is something serious but infested by turtles sounds like the lamest kind of infection one can get.

"Australia has a toad problem" also sounds like a joke when you don't know better either.

But "Australia lost a war against emus" really is a joke, which makes it harder to take the toad problem seriously if you're already aware of the emu war but not the toads.

Your info is out of date, by almost 30 years. Originally they arrested the mother and said "a din-go? Likely story, baby killer. Off to jail with you!" But later they found her shredded baby clothing among the din-go lairs (when trying to retrieve the body of a fallen rock climber from an inaccessible location) and the mother was released from prison.
