It's probably to do with unexpected costs. To bottle water you have to filter a water-supply. The fruit tree already acts as a filter.

Also, the fruit they use are ones that are excess to production, i.e. only the good-looking fruit go to the shops to be sold as fruit. Fruit juice is thus a byproduct / waste-product of fruit production, so it's relatively cheap. If it wasn't bottled it would have to be disposed of, and there are also costs to disposing of waste, so by using it for juicing instead some of those costs are avoided.

Yeah, but the fruit juice is from concentrate... Meaning it's a dash of fruit essence diluted with a bunch of filtered water.

Yeah I didn't take that into account.

Then the reason for such a price difference is probably that having sugar in something is seen as negative value by consumers.

Market price isn't based on how much stuff they managed to cram in, it's based on the utility to the consumer, and the consumer has decided bottled water has higher utility than sugary juice because it doesn't make you fat.

I splurged and bought myself some more D&D miniatures, because fuck it, it's not like ten more dollars would make a difference in the long run anyway. I got a giant orc on a dire wolf, a nice centerpiece, as well as a 2-pack of Nameless One from Planescape: Torment. I seriously hope I can paint him well, but even if he looks like shit it'll be nice to have a memento of a game that I loved so much.

I made burritos last night. I'd been talking with one of my favorite bartenders about vegetarian dishes as he's a veggieman himself, and I know from experience that he's terrible at feeding himself properly, so I decided to pack a few up and bring them down.

Needless to say, people don't generally expect to have someone drag a cooler bag of burritos into a bar and start handing them out... The reactions were quite entertaining.


But not only were folks happy to receive free food, they also gave very high praise for the quality of the contents. The bartender, who considers himself something of a burrito connoisseur, said it ranked in his top 'ritos of all time. Another random gal at the bar claimed status as "A major foodie" and was quite surprised that I'd made the things myself, as a hobbyist... She thought I worked as a cook or something and had taken them along from work.

I'm pretty sure that, as with many things, the amount of alcohol everyone had consumed beforehand played a part in their appreciation of the handiwork, but it's still very nice hearing stuff like that.
