But I recently got fed up with my work phone being a crippled verizon special that they wont freaking unlock, so I hacked the ever loving shit out of it, and flashed a wholly different firmware for a similar (but not verizon branded) phone onto it.


Works like a champ now. 

(My workplace issued some LG Optimus zone 3s to us peons so that we can use the new call light reporting system the OEMs have switched to. They were cheap verizon prepaid specials, that they ripped the SIM cards out of, and never provisioned for service.  I am of the opinion that if I have a phone on me, it should fucking work; However, because the phones were never provisioned, Verizon wanted 100$ to give me an unlock code. Fuck them.  The phone is not worth 100$.  Instead, I flashed the firmware for a cricket wireless K120 onto it, and BOOM! Radio freaking unlocked bitches.)

I have a freedompop sim in it.  Free cellphone service on my free (albeit cheap ass) cellphone.

Oh yeah, it uses the AT&T network.

Today's wild layering experiment was a success! It actually looks fine!   
Now, on my black metal quest to the faraway land of Geelong I can wear my battlejacket (which has a tragic shortage of pockets, especially after I tore one off) and my black denim jacket (which has pockets aplenty) at the same time, allowing me to carry whatever goodies and survival gear I might need along the way!

I read it and I still don't understand.  What's in it for the big networks to cooperate with this?  Seems like its just taking an already crowded market and removing paying customers from it...

Its my understanding that big US carriers have to enable 3rd party carriers and resellers to use their networks "at cost" due to requirements baked into their spectrum licenses, and also due to requirements baked into their mergers by the FTC.

Freedom pop is one such entity, as is cricket wireless, boost Mobile, and a handful of others.

The free plan is mostly offered for PR. When you get a sim from them, it defaults to the 20$/mo plan. You have to manually downgrade it to the free plan. (And it balks a few times when you do, asking if you are really, REALLY sure.)

The free plan is quite anemic. Only 200mb of data, 250 minutes of voice, and 250 text messages (no multimedia, just test) per month.

Considering this is a "if you absolutely MUST contact me at work..." / "unforseen vehicle problems running to the store after work" type solution (I do have a real, proper cellphone as well), for a phone I only carry because I am required to, the free plan is a perfect fit.
