I'm really not sure just how much actual redesigning they can fit into six months, if anything sonic might end up looking even more terrifying.

There's a rumor/conspiracy theory going around that the design everyone is freaking out about was never the "real" design, and they used it in the trailer only to both garner attention and pretend to take a high ground by "changing" it.

Personally I don't care enough about the movie (or Sonic) to form an opinion on how likely this is

That whole therory banks on the idea that corporate was willing to sign off on a potentially negative and divisive trailer, and that relies on a C level executive having a functioning brain, and that's about as believable as unicorns. It's way more likely they just don't care about abusing their VFX team into the ground to rerender huge chunks of the movie.

... incidentally, my grandfather was actually fairly intently watching one of the old Sonic cartoons this morning. Not the saturday morning one or the rock band one, but whatever the kiddier one that featured the chicken and drillbot fairly heavily was.

Man, I can see the Sonic film exploding into a whole cinematic universe. After many years of blockbusters, the franchise will be given a farewell treatment, Logan-style. The hedgehog will be old and decrepit, barely able to even walk. It will be caught crossing the road, and ran over by a slow-moving vehicle.
As he'll look into the approaching headlights of his ironic demise, he'll still have the same stoopid face. It will be immensely satisfying to see it crushed.
