I have been talking to some of my friends and swimming in the nostalgia and we’re thinking to start playing Dwarf Fortress again. I have no idea what i’m doing, what has changed since DF2012 and how much hand-holding my friends will need, having played even less of it than me.

Speaking of hand-holding, Is the mayday pack still around or are there better ones now?

On a more serious note, depending on how 'faithful' you want to be to the 'vanilla' experience, there's Meph's Tileset.

I used to always go with either ASCII (with Tyr) or Phoebus depending on whim, but I must admit that I've developed a fondness for Gemset as well of late.  Never tried LNP, though I do use both DFHack and Therapist when I play.  Just call me "filthy casual." ^_^

I mostly play adventure mode. Also, I like cleansing worlds. DFHack in max stats, an adamantine sword, and adamantine armor, then RAMPAGE. Don't leave your starting town until it is cleansed.
