No, it's the vocal fry thing, if you haven't heard it, I envy you. It's the shit those horrid kardashians do when they taaaaaalk, and for some reason it's been showing up on commercials during some of the only shows I care to pay attention to like rick and morty or mike tyson adventures and whatnot. I think there's one of the windows 10 laptop ones with the chick talking about "my blog is sometimes color or me with balloons almost always sprinkles" or some stupid shit and it's like nails on a goddamn chalkboard.

Actually I just googled it, and Vocal Fry is a thing distinct from Upspeak.

EDIT: and thinking about it, they're not really compatible. Vocal Fry is when you say everything in a "croaky" monotone, and it's become much more common with women in wealthy English-speaking nations. That's quite different to Valleyspeak / Upspeak, and they stem from different socioeconomic trends with women (career women vs consumer women). A "valley girl" vocally over-reacts to everything, whereas a Vocal Fry speaker under-reacts to everything: if your friend is having a baby, or they bought new shoes, or you're deciding on lunch or you're telling people there's a gunman shooting everyone, a Vocal Fry person's tonal reaction is the same.

One theory is that by artificially lowering the vocal tone through Vocal Fry (which is by a buzzing sound in the throat, not a regular vocal cord tone), working women are trying, subconsciously, to sound more "masculine" and less emotional, to be "taken more seriously". However, it's backfiring, as studies show that people just perceive female Vocal Fry speakers as neurotic and clear-spoken women as less neurotic than clear-spoken men. So, women should just speak clearly to be taken seriously, not try guttural tricks to make their voice sound more "male".
