I don't see why not. Your character did it, they're going to find all the evidence that he did it in the bits and pieces you failed to deal with, and you will go down forever.

But that's not what happens. That starts to happen, then the game erases your failure and pretends it never happened, because the narrative can't support that failure.

Those two scenarios aren't really even any different in terms of game mechanics, but one of them pulls you out of the story and demands a time-reversal / reload and the other does not. Perhaps you can accidentally knick your carotid artery  with the razor and bleed out, leading to the same "game over" situation?

Games are tending away from hard-fail states like that because they pull people out of the story. And more and more narrative games are played on consoles in living rooms, and viewed by more than one person. Going "ouch" is the fail state, and the time-reversal is implied but not overt, so doing it that way is because it maintains immersion in a time-continuous world rather than breaking out to a "game over" screen and then doing a time-jump backwards.

The problem with having every choice (or inaction) impacting the story is that this can very quickly result in an impossibly large project, at least if you don't think it through very carefully. Clever writing can make it workable, but it's a lot trickier than linear stories (although i agree that excessive railroading is annoying if you're not literally playing a rail shooter). There is of course the intermediate area, the illusion of choice, where it SEEMS like you're making a choice with a consequence, but in reality it's all going to result in the same outcome, even if it's presented a bit differently.

On a very vaguely related note since it's a game, Overload came out yesterday and oh man i am enjoying it a lot. Pretty game, fun game, challenging game. Also a very shameless successor to Descent, as it's quite similar in a lot of ways. Haven't been a whole lot of 6DOF* games in recent times (Retrovirus gets a mention, it's also pretty great), so this scratches that itch very nicely. :v

Wow yeah.   Not only do they have an "emergency escape" in the trailer, but the combat looks very much like Descent.  Good memories...  I was fortunate enough to play some deathmatch Descent in high school, heh, when we weren't playing Starcraft or HoMM.

Ooh, and it's actually by the creators...  The graphics look so good I'd worry about the system requirements, except that the listed ones seem pretty modest.  I'm going to keep an eye on it for sure.

Use it to murder someone in Egypt. With any luck they'll assume it was an awakened mummy.
