Not sure if anyone else here listens to the Hello Internet podcast, but #52 and #68 have been thrown into my favourites as "a bunch of banal crap and then really interesting and terrifying philisophical discussions on existential threats to humanity"
(Former is AI, latter is Fermi paradox)

Most recently listened to the one about the lack of life in the universe and was given the morsel of "what if everyone else who is alive, is alive because they're keeping their heads low, and everyone making noise in the universe is due for a cullin'"

Not sure why I like dwelling on the many horrible extinction events approaching humanity...
But there that is.

Oh boy, that's a fun one. The universe full of species who hide in their solar systems avoiding all possible signs of life and shoot relativistic missiles at anybody who doesn't because everybody else who's ever broadcast anything has also gotten relativistic-missile'd is pretty unpleasant, gotta say.

It also sounds like complete bullshit.

Here's a happy, all of those extinction level events excepting 'unseen rock smashes us' are pretty damn unlikely to occur in any timeframe that matters to the next several generations, so I am happy that nothing we discuss on the subject right now has the slightest bit of meaning.

Almost certainly not the case, and we obviously have no evidence whatsoever for or against it aside from the lack of successful contact attempts, yes.

It's not completely logically unsound, however.

Well, there are a great many things that can be described as being logically sound that have little to no bearing on reality.

I have a lovely, gentle 'beer and cider' hangover this morning, unlike the red wine-induced misery from the other day.

It's baseball season! Well, it officially started yesterday, but my favorite team's first game isn't until later tonight.

At least you've got that. Tigers - White Sox got rained out.

Eh, my team got beat yesterday and are presently getting beat today.

My team suck bottom.

I'm not watching though, baseball can be sooooo slow sometimes.

I also don't care I'm replying to stuff from 3 pages back.

starting to remember why I got into forum games.
Join us! A good way to find something to do regularly.
I'm considering it. I just worry that my current difficulties with posting would make me a burden to any GMs. That, and it looks like most of the current games are full/requiring of more capability than my phylactery DS would enable/not really my style.
Mostly the first and second.

In actual happy, I got a raise today, and I'm finally working with capable people that I sort-of get along with.

Species-level? I can only think of 'rogue AI', which likely to happen sooner than we think. I guess the worst thing about the development of A-GI is that we can't really have a timeframe for when our research will pay off. One day we'll go 'oh, we did it', and then within 15 minutes it'll either have been successfully locked into a box or escaped into the internet in order to begin devouring the entire history of mankind- at which point we'll have to wait for it to give its impressions.

National-level - there's plenty of things that can go wrong. Self-Driving cars is enough to be a big economic problem we're not ready for, (says my single sounding-board).

I'm doubtful if pervasive societal indolence is possible as a 'game over', but I still wanna discuss us first-worlders going full "Fall of the Eldar" and having society collapse due to massive cascading ennui.

My alarm didn't go off this morning, so I didn't get breakfast. Or anything, really. I was in the car 4.5 minutes after waking up, according to my brother. But that meant I got to buy a delicious chocolate muffin for breakfast, so it's all good.
