Just submitted my final polished portfolio for my Master's. Just gotta finish off the last few months of this semester, walk with my funny robes, and I am fucking done with academia forever. So glad I didn't decide to go for a pure academic course and shoot for a doctorate, and not just for financial reasons. Probably woulda offed myself before I hit 30.

Whoof, yeah. I know someone whose gone for a Doctorate, and seeing that whole process second-hand makes it seem Pretty Dang Daunting / Overwhelming. Good for when you want to do certain things, but I don't know if the investment is worth it in all cases.

Also, congrats on slaying that portfolio beast, and on your soon-to-be graduation. That's rad, and so are you!

EDIT: Do you get the robes with the hoods and stripes? Those are the best robes.

What's magical is the U.K.'s system of only making you pay when you earn over a certain threshhold, and then with next to no interest

Also, study in N.I. is a few thousand pounds cheaper than elsewhere in the UK.

The tradition still exists, though nowadays the new doctor has to get the sword for the promotion ceremony by themself, whether by buying or borrowing it. The ceremony also calls for a doctor's hat that looks a lot like a top hat, and is often more expensive than the sword. Female doctors must carry the sword in ceremonies as well, which may require some creativity in attaching the scabbard to a dress.

As an aside, the attire for a master's promotion is a gold ring and a laurel wreath, and the ring doesn't even have to be a master's ring specifically; any gold ring will do. Becoming a master seems to be much cheaper than becoming a doctor.

That whole realm of semi-anachronistic stuff is hot. Honest truth, half the reason I considered pursuing a doctorate is so that I could then go back and knock out the last days pf service so that I could sit for my merchant marine 100GT inland captain's license and then insist on being called Doctor Captain —.
