Depends on what other thing you're cooking with and what you're cooking, really. How, too. If your potatoes are coming out moldy you're buggering something up. Can't really recall specifics at th'mo', though. I've cut down on fried stuff pretty tremendously over the last decade or two, and didn't personally cook with it much to begin with. Just ate a fair bit of nice stuff when I was younger.

Thaaat said, even down here in the US south we mostly use vegetable oil. Not necessarily olive (tbh, I dislike the taste/etc. olive oil inflicts on food, a lot of the time), but not bacon grease or whathaveyou. Save that stuff for special meals :3

Yeah, iirc they changed the name because for some reason they thought "rape seed oil" sounded bad to customers. I can never remember the new name, though so I stick to the old. Much closer to the Swedish word ("raps/olja") so it's easier to reach.

But yeah, I agree. It is my favourite among oils too.

Huh, I always thought "grease" was only gooey animal fat or maybe margarine.  Apparently it applies to liquid cooking oils too though.

I find the idea of cooking with something that isn't olive oil disgusting.  I tried fat-fried potatoes during my first visit to the UK in 2001.  Ugh. Eventually I got to buying pork strips at a nearby grocery and roasting them in the oven.

There were two arabs in that dorm that were my neighbours. After a couple of weeks of moldy fatty chips they started  eyeing my pork sandwitches with jealousy.

Olive oil tastes pretty good, and I cook it into rice occasionally, but I worry about overheating it (about 365F apparently, turns it into trans fat).  I usually just use canola which, yes, is from rapeseed...  Maybe I'm just silly, but I'm glad they renamed it.

My family fried a turkey in peanut oil once...  That was amazing.  Twice as much saturated fat, though.

Because it comes from the Latin "rapa/rapum", meaning turnip.  This is to be distinguished from the Latin "rapare" (to seize), from whence we received the other word after a few centuries of linguistic evolution.
