Idle question: when you say you cook with grease you mean actual grease as in animal fat?

I would say please don't add any sort of water to a chemical fire and use a dry fire extinguisher or call the local fire department instead. It might make things worse even if you toss a rag down on it, wet or otherwise. Too many things can go wrong in these steps as is, so you might just be adding fuel to the fire itself, or worse, adding water. So juuuust use a dry fire extinguisher or call the firemen, they can handle it better than you can.

I'd say prolly? I dunno if people use grease to mean cooking oil in general, but it doesn't seem like it.

Tight pot lid can work better than a lot of things. Caveat being the tight part, and getting it there to begin with. You don't want to involve water in a grease fire basically at all, ever. Beating on it with something or another (rag can work, but maybe something somewhat less flammable -- they make fire-retardant cloth-like stuff for that, iirc) can help. Haven't really tried baking soda. Salt just... works. Dump the junk on it until it stops being fwooshy. Takes a fair bit, but so does baking soda or extinguisher stuff.

And yeah, cooking oil in general. Sometimes animal fat of some sort, sometimes vegetable oil. Proper reaction to it catching fire isn't terribly much different, far as I'm aware.

It was outdoors and I just beat the hell out of it.

This has been my go to strategy for putting out fires outdoors too. My brother used to have a tendency to let things get out of control. So we just use a shovel, because water is usually nowhere to be found.

Maybe I just picked it up from exposure, but even as an American I call oil or butter grease. As far as I'm concerned, grease is the catch-all word for any fat used in cooking. Also, there's "grease" as the verb for applying grease to a cooking thinger (or machine), but I can't imagine that's unusual. Ditto on the Gas and Gasoline thing (but petrol only pops up rarely).

Also I put a fire out without water today, that was kinda cool

I failed to put out a grease fire without water before. My roommate saved my ass (and by extension, my kitchen) from burning down using the "cover it" trick, before rolling back into bed. This is why, to this day, I cannot be trusted to cook frozen hashbrowns. Or basically fry anything.

Contrary to some rather cynical expectations that La La Land was a shoe-in for Best Picture due to appealing to hollywood nostalgia among the old white hollywood men who comprise the Academy (Note: haven't seen it yet but I'm sure it's good in its own right), Moonlight won the show

Also, called it that Zootopia would win Best Animated. We had a lot of good animation in 2016 but it delivered a very timely message in a fairly ingenious way. And fie upon the cynical assertion that "Oh it's gonna be Moana, they always pick the Disney princess!" Yeah, Moana is alright but all the other nominees were fantastic. Except perhaps The Red Turtle, for which I cannot say, having not yet managed to see it. I do wish Kubo had won some kind of technical award, though, studio Laika really pushed the envelope of stop motion on that one.

I find the idea of cooking with something that isn't olive oil disgusting.  I tried fat-fried potatoes during my first visit to the UK in 2001.  Ugh. Eventually I got to buying pork strips at a nearby grocery and roasting them in the oven.

There were two arabs in that dorm that were my neighbours. After a couple of weeks of moldy fatty chips they started  eyeing my pork sandwitches with jealousy.

Also, that's a bit sad, Chairman. I usually use a rapeseed oil/margarine mix for everyday use, but use olive oil when it fits better for specific courses, but nothing makes food taste better than butter. That's just a universal rule. Meat? Better in butter. Seafood? Better in butter. Root food? Better in butter.
