Agreed. Nothing's more fun than target shooting. I never quite got used to firing my father's service pistol, but I was an alright shot with a rifle that I could shoulder. Aiming is actually pretty hard.

i'm only really held back in that i mostly prefer weird and old guns that are either impossible to find or cost enough to buy a car with

I would like gun. My father has gun, but there is nowhere to shoot gun as we are in a fairly urban area, so there is nothing I can really do. I got a bayonet for Christmas, though.

if you have a car, or access to a car, chances are there's a gun club or shooting range or something closer than you think

There's also random hillsides in areas that are neither private property (unless you have the owners permission) nor a national or state park. Here in Idaho the blm allows hunting and firearms practice on blm managed land as long as you clean up after yourself and obey all state and federal laws regarding hunting and firearms use. Of course, something like 65% the land area of the state of Idaho is either a national or state park, wildlife refuges, or blm managed, and a good portion of the rest belongs to ranchers or other private enterprises.
