Those sorts of ridges and peaks have special terminology in geology. I cant remember them for shit right now, but I know they're all in french (from the formations in the french alps, french geologists)

It's all from glaciation, the way glaciers erode hillsides.

I dont know the history of the specific butte I'm living behind, it would be nice

Jeez, there was even a "mesa" (butte, probably) in the NC foothills we visited occasionally, I just can't remember the name.  It was weird like a butte, standing alone yet almost vertical edges.  Bizarre.

Anyway, sorry, the reason I remembered Montana is because I enjoyed sitting outside in the cold and watching the moon pass into a peak, then emerging from the other side.  The moonlight dimming, and eventually coming back.  All a while before moonset - the peaks were just that extreme.
