Does uber provide health insurance? Do the amounts you're listing include what has to be taken out for taxes, social security, etc? Do they help with car insurance, repairs? Just wondering how it compares to taxi driving when all the other costs are accounted for.

No, I haven't assembled my data to the point of factoring out costs.  Working on it.  I've gone out driving only 13 days over the course of a month.  Totalling about 55 hours and 100 trips.  Its a side gig for me.  I jumped into it rather suddenly and am slowly working out optimization as I go.

We're desperate for some extra income and its something I can do with total flexibility, which is an absolute prerequisite given the nature of my day job (salaried).  Any time I have a couple hours and I feel like it, I can go out and drive. 

I'd be surprised if what im making can't cover costs enough to be worth it.  Also, they have programs for helping out with insurance, maintenance, etc, but I haven't looked too closely at them yet.  Part of it is because I'm driving my parents car on their insurance, but we hope to be replacing it ourselves soon.

If anyone else takes up driving, there is a referral thing if you're feeling nice.  Although I've read that its better to start on lyft first, because Uber has some serious incentive programs to poach lyft drivers.

Moving out of the horrors of Glenroy?

Glenroy isn't so bad, really. The main reason I left it was in the hopes of getting a place on my own.
Then I spent a few awful months in a redneck town in Queensland after discovering the place I thought I had lined up wasn't really sorted at all.
Back in Glenroy staying at the same place in the spare room for now, until I can get a place.

I'm pretty excited for this place I inspected the other day, though. Just need to get some stuff photocopied so I can apply for it.

I saw Arrival tonight. T'was a nice bit of sci-fi that wasn't all lazers and rubber foreheads. More like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" or something.

My mom insists that the scenes with the main character's kid happened before the titular Arrival, while I'm pretty sure that the evidence points towards the kid being born afterwards. The core of her argument is the line "I forgot how it felt to hold you", while I point to the play-doh aliens, the male character's seeming unfamiliarity with the main character, and the throwaway line "You had a husband?".
