In most decent-sized cities in the U.S. you're lucky if you can find a tiny one-bedroom apartment for $1000. Cheap one-bedrooms in Manhattan rent for $2300-$6000. I live in a jumped-up midwest town that calls itself a city and one-bedrooms rent for ~$750, and that's a median; the range runs from $500 to >$1500.

It's somewhat proportional to average income, and not in a good way. The only way you're going to get living space that doesn't eat half your income is to live in a rural shithole or overcrowd with more people than a place is meant to hold so that you can split rent.

Yeah, rent is basically a poverty tax. Much better to save up for a down payment on a cheap home, because the mortgage payments will almost always be far lower (often half or less of equivalent-area rent) and you get something at the end of it instead of continuing to line a slumlord's pockets until you die. If it's at all possible, avoid renting.

It's also a big part of why minimum wage is so fucked, even beyond decreasing purchasing power relative to the past dollar. If you're very lucky and paying $500/mo while working full-time year-round at minimum wage, your total annual earnings after rent and federal income tax are probably <$7500. Add in insurance (because a minimum wage job ain't giving you good benefits, that's for sure), gas/fare, state/local taxes, utilities, groceries, assorted other living expenses, and even without unexpected injuries, property damage, &c. you can barely save anything, and that's if your net income is still positive.

I guess it does depend a lot, because I thought Raleigh (431k pop) was at least a decent-sized city   It's no Charlotte, but it's sprawly.
Asheville (87k) is what I'd consider decent-sized, I think.  It's bigger than a town but much smaller than Raleigh.
Either way, never payed more than ~800 a month for a decent one-bedroom, and less for my single room stint.

More reasons I'm never moving to the US, I guess. I mean, I knew the cost of living over there was higher, but wow. A few years ago my family (six people) was staying in a house with bedrooms for everyone and rooms we didn't need for R8000 a month. That's less than $600. Wow.
