I find 'no' to be worse, personally.
Saying 'that was terrible' or even 'you need a punch in the face' can be taken as joking/endearing. 'no' is just a closed statement. It shuts people down.

Yeah. Ultimately all you can do is try to understand peoples meanings. In this case you thought it meant something different then what was meant. And then pretty much everyone said they think of it in some other way, so, at least you've learned that the other usage is still widely used, so next time you encounter the word you'll have a better (or worse hah....) chance of understanding the meaning. Boom. Positive learning.

Not everyone on the internet uses words on the internet in the way the rest of the internet uses the word. Judging someone by the standards of a community they don't frequent is mucho unfairo

So I finished the piece, and it's awesome, like, I'm actually really pleased with how it came out. BUT!
