I've been pushing since my mid-teens that storytelling is central to the evolution of society and what it means to be human, and that video games are a major new step in the evolution of storytelling, so kind of a big deal.  Games like Undertale that actually use interactive elements as a part of the narrative are what I'm after, and they're far too rare.

You're a skeleton after my own heart. Games and sims as a medium for social and ideological change is basically the thesis I'm trying to build a career on. I think there's something really powerful about the fact that games can actually put people into a situation, and have them weigh choices and handle situations they might never be able to encounter in day-to-day life, but which they can still experience, enjoy, and learn from. It's deeply personal in a way a lot of media can be, but to a greater degree than has been possible before.

This is one of the reasons I'm really excited to start working in VR. My OSVR DevKit comes at the end of the month!

I missed most of the conversation, so I'll just say that Undertale was great and I'm glad that people get to play it.

Seriously though Vector, go in as blind as you can and just experience it :P

(Take your time. The music is definitely the highpoint.)
It's pretty good, though. Ignore the fandom, at least until you finish the game. And ignore what people SAY about the fandom, as it's mostly bullshit. People whining that it's cancerous blah de blah. It's honestly not that terrible and people who whine about it are often just as bad.

Enjoy!
The worst part of the fandom is the spoilers they inevitably cause. That's about it as far as I know.

That and loads of copies of shitty compilations and some bad voice-overs. But really everything has that. That's just the internet.

I know my first run-through because I was able to make educated guesses about some stuff which meant I missed out on the full experience. :/ That and being too hasty at times.

Yeah, I completely agree with you on this. Games are a new (well, relative to other mediums), and really quite good platform for story-telling media.

Not much to say that you haven't covered.

Since it's appreciated here I think Ill give this a try.

If any of you remember the Gearhead Rougelike, it's been getting worked on again. And at that, the dev has moved things to github, and is looking for help sorting through the improvements the japanese fans have done and integrating them. Along with more good and nice changes and updates coming up for the original.

If you know stuff about git, pascal or japanese why not help? It's still a pretty great game.

Aye. I posted a while ago about it being updated, I think? I have no idea how to play it and couldn't find a guide.

In all honesty, Undertale was interesting, for better or for worse.

The gameplay is fun, but honestly forgettable in spite of its gimmicks - with the early game being needlessly hard if you're new to bullet hells; the Music is 100% Toby Fox, which is pretty much saying it's mostly awesome for the most part, unless you hate homestuck that much. The graphics are shit, even at gamemaker tier levels. It's quite basically a simple-graphics game due to conveniences and personal capability to produce a game with consistent graphics, because let's face it - Toby is a music/coder guy, not an artist. He built around the crappy graphics to add some theme, and what came out was a throwback to the NES games.

Sound effect design is hit-or-miss, but the storyline is WAY superb given its concept. And it pulls no punches in that department - everything is presented as wonderfully as Toby could in terms of story elements.

The Fandom can produce wonderful things (Undertale RED, various remixes and that one Minecraft Map that abuses command blocks to create the final battle), but avoid the rabid fans in Steam, other forums and even in reddit.

And if you can't avoid them (they are everywhere), you'll have to understand that it's human instinct to try and share something wonderful they experienced - either to boast or to promote. And play it however you wish, but the most economic way to play the game is >to avoid killing anyone to shave off a few hours of playthrough if you plan on seeing it to the end<.

Wait, that's the high-customization mechWarrior one, right? I've been meaning to check it out.

Yeah that's the one. Rough around the edges but fun.

My tip for GH1 is to make sure to do the tutorial at the start, as it gives you a good mecha for early game rather than having to scrape on up with other ones.

Also if you dig around in the comments of the gearhead webpage you can find a zip file with an improved tileset and new portraits. You can easily replace pretty much all of the very low quality ones with the ones in there.

Not quite sure what thread this goes in, but this was pretty cool. I never really thought about it before, but these guys must have some ridiculous finesse.

10 Cloverfield Lane was pretty nice. John Goodman makes a terrific unstable survivalist and the plot kept me guessing a good amount.
