In reading this to myself, I realized that Russian is one of the few languages that sounds pretty much the same drunken and slurred as it does sober. 

One of the more memorable bits of advice I got during my attempt to learn the language was to "Sound depressed and drunk" for proper pronunciation.  Of course,  мой  русский очень плохо, so I'm not sure what that says for me.

This way to speak could probably win you some sympathy. Just don't try this with the police if, God forbid, you will end up in Russia late at night in the street.
Мой русский, according to some of my peers, is not that good either, and mind you I was born and raised speaking it. This language is a mess, I cannot understand how can one possibly learn it without extensive language practice.

I only had one year of Russian in high school and that was 20+ years ago. But I'd taught myself to read Cyrillic when I was like 6 or 7, back when we thought my grandmother's family was Russian.

I was immensely proud when my daughter came across my Russian textbook a month or two ago, and began teaching herself Cyrillic and some basic Russian vocabulary. She's already of the opinion that Russian is easier than English because they have distinct letters for ch and sh. (And shch, but as I pointed out to her, about the only time that sound occurs in English is if you're sneezing.) 

She has yet to encounter the arcane Hell that is conjugation.

Probably because it was, at least to begin with, created deliberately.

Hehe. I wonder how do you even explain Ы sound. I heard it is typically explained like "the sound you make when you get hit really hard in the abdomen". That's actually true, when it comes to me, at least.
Ы is probably my favourite sound ever.
